:) Can anyone help an old confused man with no/limited IT skills?

Would someone kindly give me a walkthru on how to upgrade my firmware on my RT-N66u Ver B1? I upgraded it to merlin 3.0.0.4.270.26 not long after i got it, BUT i cannot remember how i did it!
I am confused about the reset. Is that the 30/30/30 reset i seem to remember reading about somewhere? Or do you use the fatory reset in the firmware on the admin tab?
I have read and re-read merlin's instructions but they are not gelling with me (old age i know) Confused! Confused! Please help

Thanks for the help. just dont want to do something silly and brick it. So if i'm reading the notes from merlin correctly, once i've installed the firmware i do the factory reset then? Not before installing?

Correct. Do the reset after you install new firmware.

There's no need to do a 30-30-30 reset. Just a factory reset. The instructions on how to to perform reset are on Asus website in your user manual. It says to press and hold the reset button for more than 5 seconds.

Do i need to do a reset? downloaded new firmware and everything seems to be working fine. is it just luck or have i made a mistake somewhere? Running InSSider i get 100 on 5Ghz channel and 78 on 2.4Ghz

Your flashing from much older firmware, a reset is needed.

...however, if all is working to your satisfaction, leave well alone. One *should* reset and weird and (not so) wonderful things may happen if you do not. If you find anything strange going on, you will HAVE to reset.

I thought factory reset was same as 30/30/30.

Nope, factory reset is just clearing your nvram. 30/30/30 is basically a wakeup call to your router that also should put it into recovery mode so that you can use the Asus firmware recovery utility to flash it. The 30/30/30 thing is a last resort, used when you can't get anything else to work, just before you get really desperate and attach a serial cable to see what the early boot is doing *smile*.
