With regard to AC68U and Smart Connect, I just was just on the phone with Sprint because I was having issues with WiFi calling with my Galaxy S6. They were suggesting I use their router that was designed to work better with WiFi calling, in part because it has a Smart Connect feature. The router that they use is an AC66U. Here's a link to details on their router - it does have some customized Sprint firmware - maybe to provide the Smart Connect - but point is they have it working on the AC66U; seems like the AC68U would be capable as well.

They use a newer SDK version than Asus for the RT-AC66U. It's not just a simple flag to enable at build time, you need to change to that newer SDK.

Does it mean that Sprint completely built new firmware based on newer SDK version than Asus on its own?

Either that, or they paid Asus (or some other contracted developers) to build it for them, based on their specifications.

Sprint thinks people will buy anything (and some people will) but no matter how they are presenting this router it may have custom firmware that was built for them (cause they don't have anyone that is going to figure out how to do it). They are just trying to sell you something that some consumers of theirs may need (trying to use their cell phones inside a home from the basement of a 1940's home, trust me it gets worse than that) or people like you that don't need it because you may already have a good setup. The most common cause of Sprint's WiFi calling failing to work is Sprint. They've had it down for months (since it's roll out years ago) for some customers due to firmware updates that break it for the particular phone or the service is down due to a network services issue that also takes them months to fix (that they may or may not admit to their employee's via hot issue reports). Don't get me wrong it's a great feature when it works but there are times it doesn't and there is still lots of work that needs to be done to get it better.
