I recently upgraded my internet service to 400Mbps and when I run a SpeedTest from the router (ASUS AC86U/Adaptive QOS/Internet Speed) the maximum download speed is in the area of 160Mbps and the upload speed is at the expected 20Mbps. However, when I run a SpeedTest from any of my computers the download speed exceeds 400Mbps and the upload speed remains consistent at 20Mbps.

All of the computers tested had a wire connection.

Any suggestions?

I can reach 479 Mbps down using the Asus speedtest on my AC86U. It is possible.
I agree, I'm sure its possible I just don't understand why I'm see what I'm seeing. I even wiped the configurations clean and only included a single computer and nothing changed. :confused:

What's the issue? Your devices are reaching the advertised ISP speed anyway. :rolleyes:
 
I had that happen at times on a my Netgear CAX80 Modem/Router with the Ookla page, probably just an app issue on the router. I would just ignore it, as clients have no issues.

Ookla speedtest from within ac86u gives
Download speed 400 upload 60

Ookla speedtest done on my wired laptop on Win10 gives
Download speed 750 upload 60
(which is what my provider should give me)
 
Built-in Ookla speedtest is known to be CPU limited. Just a bloatware in Asuswrt firmware.
 
well, i'm experiencing the opposite effect on my ax86u. with all things being equal, i'm seeing 1100+ download using qos on merlinware, but can't reach 900 via my edge browser using the same site and no vpn. mind you this is pure ethernet! so, i'm confused but i won't lose much sleep over the discrepancy.

let me add that prior to this very recent 1g upgrade, metrics within the qos interface and on the browser were similar when running at 300. fwiw, i did need to change a couple rj45 cables to achieve the higher speeds.

Might be because you use Gigabit on your LAN, which limits throughput to around 940 Mbps. You need a 2.5 Gbps connection to fully achieve gigabit throughput on a speed test.

To get a better feel for BW - do the test on an attached client - the router based things have never been that reliable.

I don't think it is really a question of reliability but the fact that the processor power of a router is limited and if it is taking care of it basic functions then the speedtest results are impacted which usually means reporting a slower speed than what is actually available.

That's one reason not to use it...

Much like folks on other platforms - just don't do it, as the results will not reflect the real world - test from external clients on the LAN/WLAN side if one must...

yes, i am using the 2.5g port on the ax86u. before switching to that port, i only saw the upper 900s as you mentioned. this discrepancy is puzzling. thanks.

The whole network needs to be 2.5 Gbps to reach > 940 Mbps, not just the WAN. The bottleneck will be between the router and the LAN client.

well, when you put it that way, it makes a lot more sense. the qos app (imbedded within the firmware), is measuring throughput before the port.
