Thank you, Ozarkedge and gp-se. I think I went down a rabbit hole . seems easy enough, the part where I got worried was updating firmware+ then wiping. But I think I got it. Restore +initialize (tick mark) will give me the reset type I need after updating firmware, vs doing just restore (initialize unchecked) , correct?

Either method would work, I prefer Restore+Initialize (tick mark) because it wipes everything.

Yesterday I purchased an AX86U Pro, I connected my Modem to the WAN port, then used WiFi to run the QIS. After setting the SSID and log in info I used the web GUI to update the firmware. After confirming the latest firmware was installed I did a Restore+Initialize in the GUI. I then set everything up.

Don't be concerned about getting infected with Malware on the initial setup, you need to enable remote access and Asus Ai features for the malware, but those settings are disabled on initial setup.

The reason I got hung up on this was because previous poster said you can setup router and update firmware reset before even connecting to WAN, however, WAN is needed here to update firmware. If I understand WAN correctly )

You CAN update the router without connecting it to the internet (WAN) by downloading the firmware to the computer (or mobile device) first before you connect the computer (or mobile device) to the RT-AX86U Pro. You would use the manual firmware update method which will allow you to select the previously downloaded and extracted firmware file that was saved to the local computer if performing this manual update method.

Just follow the setup screens in GUI or Asus App, update the firmware online, do the rest of your configuration, use your new router. No need to download firmware and update the router offline, no need to hard reset a new router after. All you need to do is described in the User Manual. Read it.
