ASUS Firmware Much More Stable Than Merlins

All, I have been an experienced IT user for many years and cannot believe how many people are still saying how great the merlin firmware is! Compared with the ASUS firmware, the merlin firmware is buggy, slow and intermittent. The new ASUS firmware is like lightning and has fixed many issues including increasing download speed via FTTC - please note this is not just the 5Ghz issues but 2.4 also. I appreciate the homebrew nature of the few extra features, but for anyone looking for solid, stable connections - please do not waste your time with the merlin firmware, head straight for ASUS firmware. I wish there were a significant number of voices on here stating this previously to save me the toil of messing with the Merlin FW over the last couple of weeks.

Hello but asus firmware is not support entware and jffs2.In asus firmware i cannot create swap mount script. Asus firmware does not support ssh.

Well, I am very happy to hear that ASUS finally started improving the quality of the firmware, but please keep in mind that you need to compare apples to apples - meaning FW versions.

The current Merlin is not perfect, but it is still better than the ASUS FW version it is based on.

Let's wait until Merlin releases his version of the latest ASUS firmware and then we can talk...

Personally, I disagree with you. I find the Merlin builds to be more stable, with fewer bugs, and with more features. I also find Merlin to be extremely responsive to questions and feedback.

Of course, the important fact is that no one forces you to use alternative firmware, and if you prefer the Asus builds, then you can use them and be happy. It's not a zero sum game.

Agree 100% ,Merlin FW is as stable as the ASUS FW if not more so . The problems are not in the tweaks Merlin makes , but in the ORIGINAL ASUS FW (drivers or whatever ) . Of course I probably not as experienced an IT user as ole Bazz , but have maintained a few networks over the last 30 years .
Merlin keep up the good work , Asus recognizes the great work you do , don't let the comments from Bazz bother you .

Very strong statement. Stability alone is not only matter. Merlin's is based on ASUS GPL open source, you sound like he is making things worse than better? Hope you won't have to eat what you publicly said here. Experrienced IT user ought to know better. Are you a pofessional in IT field?

Everbody is entitled to his opinion but i would be nice to show some respect and even better some arguments for this statement.

Using the Merlin firmware for some time and i have a rocksolid router with just the additional features i need.

To be honest, i am running 3.0.0.4.354.29 ( Merlin build)
Waiting for the updated and improved by Merlin based on new asus version before i update.

Which version from Asus are you comparing to which version of Merlin?
Remeber: The latest 2 versions from Asus have not yet been release as source code! No chance for Merlin to start working on this versions...

What are the bugs, slowness and what is intermittent in the Merlin version?
Remember: Merlin takes the sources from Asus and carefully enhances them...

Been running Merlin's latest AC66 release for the last 3 weeks with no reboots and no errors in the logs. In my experiences, Merlin's firmware is just as if not more stable than ASUS's. If you have seen stability problems or bugs with Merlin's FW, you have other issues not related to FW. i.e. clear NVRAM, etc.

I think I am going to have to somewhat agree with bazzap. I don't need the extra features that Merlin puts into his builds and considering that ASUS has finally decided to fix issues with the AC66U to me, his firmware is no longer needed. I work as a network engineer, and when you manage large networks, you just want stuff to work and not futz with it when it does work. Considering how horrible the initial releases of ASUS' firmware was (I have owned this router since the day Newegg first listed it on their website) Merlin's firmware was a nice relief to some of the problems. I don't use any of the additional features and it has been stated many times that other than the additional features that have been added, not much else is changed. So that is why I personally am going back to stock. That's not to say that Merlin's work is not appreciated because it is. However, I have noticed a few times that his firmware does seem to introduce issues. My only complaint is that when I report issues, most of the responses I have gotten were a quick dismissal because Merlin himself hasn't experienced those issues. I realize that he has a life and just like all of us, has a lot to do.

So, here is my suggestion that has fixed almost all of my issues. If you don't need the additions that Merlin has added, go back to stock as I do feel it is more stable. If you own an AC66U and are trying to use an Intel Ultimate N 6300. Just go ahead and throw that card in the trash and purchase the new Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260. It works very well with this router and I am getting connected to it at 866Mpbs and am getting 23-30MBps transfer rates. Worth every 30 dollars I spent. Thanks Merlin for your early work on this router.

I don't believe you. I have used both and merlin's firmware is just as stable as the version of AsusWRT that it is based on. I am running 3.0.0.4.372.32Beta1 on my router and 3.0.0.4.372.31 on my Media Bridge. Both have been running for a week without hiccup, with the exception of an Internet outage by Cox but you can't fault Merlin or Asus for that. I have three other media bridges spanning my house and all three connect as seamlessly to Merlin's firmware as they do to the version of AsusWRT that they are based on. If you were what you say then you wouldn't make such general statements which is why I know you are not what you claim to be.
