Looking to see if anyone who uses expressVPN has been able to get it working to stream Netflix utilizing OpenVPN on their router. Tried configuring it on the router using LA-3 and although it shows my IP in Cali, I am still getting the proxy error from Netflix. I am able to stream US content if I initiate the VPN from my laptop but been unsuccessful initiating it from the router. The GUI differs from the regular AC5300. Thanks!

While I have not tried directly from my GT-AC5300, I use the New Jersey 2 location to stream Netflix and Amazon from my firesticks that are running Express VPN.

If I read the instructions for the firesticks correctly, it also uses an app. I don't have issues with the VPN when I initiate it at the end device, ie: laptop and phone. Only seem to get the proxy issue when I initiate the VPN from the router. This was configured using the "manual configuration" settings from expressvpn. From what I'm gathering over at the GT-AC5300 thread on this forum, this router seems to have bugs with its OpenVPN system. Might be why it's not working

I am running the latest AI Mesh firmware and the only way on any firmware I have been able to get it to work is to add the vpn info under vpn fusion and turn the vpn on for only the devices you want to use it for. Better than what previous firmwares had which was it not working AT ALL.

That's how I've been trying to setup my VPN. Using VPN fusion and only adding my smart tv and laptop. Unfortunately, my netflix still gives me a proxy error when trying to view US Content. It's only when I launch my VPN app from my laptop directly does it work with no proxy error. Had the express VPN customer rep assist but still stuck at the same issue. I'm thinking its the wireless router since it works fine from the laptop directly. Gonna dig out my old wireless router and see if that works, if so, then I can pretty much narrow it down to the GT-AC 5300 and not the openVPN file. If it does work, then its sad that such an expensive router can't even perform VPN correctly.

I am experiencing the identical issue on the AC86U router. ExpressVPN suggested using Dallas or NJ1/3 servers configured on the Asus router which is currently working for USA Netflix.

Tried those servers and DC and all give the same result. Haven't had time to pull out my old Asus router but I'm pretty sure its the router that's the culprit. According to the expressVPN site, they claim that the RT-AC5300 does work with their OpenVPN config. I guess the GT-AC5300 needs some more work on fixing the bugs. Very frustrating that updates on this router isn't occurring more frequently, it's their flagship router.

Update: the LA3 server works (unblocks USA Netflix) on AC88U and 68U (both on Merlin FW), just tried it this morning. There MUST be a simple, yet plausible rational for this issue?!

Try using LA-1. It is the only one that works with Netflix. It works just fine with my RT-AC5300 (DD-WRT)

Mate, using a full blown VPN service purely for Netlix is waaaaaay overkill!! Not to mention slowing your connection as OpenVPN takes a large speed hit as well as an expensive solution @ $12.95 per month (cost of ExpressVPN). Yes, Netflix have clamped down on geographically restricted content but there are still easy ways to bypass this without faffing around with VPNs.

My solution: I am using unblock.us for a few $ per month however you will also need to need to block Google DNS at router level as Netflix are using the hard coded 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 DNS on many devices (eg my Nvidia Shield TV box) to determine the users true location. So on your Asus router, you simply set up static routes to block 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4. and then try pinging to one of these from any connected device to confirm that you're unable to access Google DNS. A simple guide here:

https://support.overplay.net/hc/en-us/articles/360000172213-Blocking-Public-DNS-Asus-Router

Btw there are many other Smart DNS services but I find unblock.us the best in terms of cost and choice of Netflix regions - you can select nearly every netflix region in the world though I mainly alternate between Netflix US and Netflix Canada (i am in UK).

Hope this helps :)

Netflix USA streams well on expressVPN server LA-1 (Asus AC86U, OpenVPN client). LA-3 is also working again but I use LA-1 primarily now. NJ, Denver and Washington servers also bypass Netflix USA geo-blocking. I am located in SE Asia so west coast servers are fastest for me.
