I have Asuswrt-Merlin 380.58 installed on my RT-AC88U, and the ASUS Router app for Android (version 1.0.0.2.43) works great when connecting to the router while my phone is connected to my wireless network.

However, when connecting through OpenVPN (TUN - since TAP is not supported on the OpenVPN Android app - meaning I'm necessarily on a different subnet), I just get 'Discovering' for a few seconds, followed by 'Unable to reach'. Even though I can't get to the router via the ASUS Router app, I can actually open the browser on my phone and connect successfully to the router's IP address. So, it would seem logical that the app could also successfully connect to the router. I'm not sure what is preventing that from happening.

Is there anything I can do to make the Android app reach the router while using OpenVPN? TIA.

I contacted ASUS, and eventually got to someone "in the know" about the ASUS Router app for Android. Their response was as follows:

The VPN related features are not implemented in this app yet.
It is already on our plan, but it is complicated so it will take time for development and verification.
Sorry for your inconvenience.

I have two ac68u with Merlin 380.66 on them in my home. I use them for wireless only not routing. I use untangle for my router. My openvpn has the same issue as you. The reply you got from ASUS seems to refer to the VPN features of the router in the app not the app being able to connect to the routers. I am perplexed as to why it will not connect every other app I use has no issues . RDP ...webpages . I know it uses https and an odd port. Other than that not sure what the deal is doesn't seem to like to be routed.

If the remote network, from which you make your OpenVPN connection back to the home router, has an Asus router as its gateway, the Asus app would discover that, no doubt, and would ask for the login credentials. On that basis, even if Asus developed the app as suggested, it would then have to ask which Asus router you wanted to connect to, the local one or the one at the other end of the vpn connection. Somehow, I can't see that happening.

Pretty as the app is, and wondering what security flaws await discovery in its code, I removed it from my iOS device and thus limit login to the router solely via the conventional method, the webui.

I have two ac68u routers and it does ask which I want to connect to. It then connects to them via IP address of the device HTTPS port 8443. I don't use them to route at all one is in ap mode the other is in media bridge mode. At home they work perfect. Via my android phone over the tmobile network while connected to the home network via an Openvpn tunnel it will not connect to either of the ASUS devices. I don't have an ASUS router anywhere in the route from phone to home. I use a linux based home router running openvpn server. My internet connection is gig fiber it's way too fast for an ac68u to route and do wireless and security. But they make great ap's and bridges.
