I am using AC88U as main router and AC86U as repeater (they are connected via 5GHz). Both use same SSID.

I have soundbar and Chromecast connected to main AC88U, but my phone can see them and stream to them only when connected to main router, not to an extender. Not really sure why.

I do not run Wifi in "AP isolated" mode.

Is there any other setting that can influence this?

Same setup via AiMesh works just fine (but has other problems...).

Have you tried with different SSIDs for router 5 GHz and repeater 5 GHz? And perhaps forget and remake connections on the phone.

Not sure what happened, but after rebooting both routers, without any config change, it works as expected.
Asus does have some strange bugs in their firmware.
Anyway, works ok now.

Try this :

I was able to RESOLVE this issue by disabling theAirtime Fairness and Universal Beamformingfeature in the router:
  • Log into the router as the administrator
  • Select within the left pane menu: Advanced Settings > Wireless
  • Select along the top tabs: Professional
  • Select the Wifi Band (drop down menu: 2.4Ghz) having the issue
  • Set the following 2 features to Disable:
  1. Airtime Fairness
  2. Universal Beamforming
  • Click on the Apply button to save the settings
