So I am a bit new to advanced networking, and I am not 100% sure that the NAT Loopback is what I am going for. I just upgraded my router to the Asus RT-AC66R + Merlin from a DLink DD-WRT build.

I have a dynamic DNS setup and I would like to set it up to use the DNS internally (eg home.ip.com:8000 goes to one computer and home.ip.com:9000 goes to another computer). This works externally.

I think NAT Loopback is what will help this work. I tried looking at my old router (which it worked on) and I can't see what I had set to make it work (yay!). I tried setting it to Merlin and Asus with NAT Passthrough enabled and disabled.

I have seen that there seems to be some issues with NAT Loopback, but none of it seems to apply to my router.

I am comfortable in SSH, so let me know what you need to help me out and I will be happy to comply.

Thank you for

The port forwarding works from an external source. It is the DNS name that is not getting resolved internally, or the router is not forwarding it to the correct internal computer.

>ping home.ip.com

Pinging home.yvong.com [externalIPAddress] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 108.162.140.110:
Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 0, Lost = 1 (100% loss),

Router default settings are not to respond to ping requests, and you are also pinging your own router from your own network, not sure how that acts.
Since I have DDNS set (asus ddns) on my home dynamic IP address, I'm pretty sure entering http://ddns:8000/ works.
Do you have any custom scripts active?

OK, Now I feel stupid. It turns out my script to update my DDNS (PHP Script running on my PC) failed to update correctly... so that was the issue - my hostname was not pointing to the correct IP address.

Thanks for your help Mikeyy!

No problem, glad you resolved it.
Setting up router to update your DDNS looks better from my perspective then having PC turned on for DDNS.
You can also use free Asus DDNS with Asus routers.

I am running a custom script to update a Dreamhost DNS entry - I may look to moving this onto my router now that I have everything working.

Step1 of a new install - get it back to what it was.
Step2: make a backup
Step3: Play!
