ASUS RT-AC68U vs ASUS RT- 87U

Hi, Looks one of these toys could be Chmas gift for me.
Could you please advice what to choose? ;o)

I would get the RT-AC68U. The RT-AC87U is so new that few clients even support it's maximum capabilities.

Another RT-AC87U will.


Either one will be fine for a basic network setup. But if you need anything extra right now for the router to do (VPN, USB disks, etc.) the RT-AC87U will need more attention for the next few weeks or months until it gets to the stability that the RT-AC86U has already attained.

The RT-AC68U is a great present; the RT-AC87U would be AWESOME.

Don't forget about the AC68P....68U with the 87U processor!

AC68P is a better choise for the same price. If you have the money get AC87U.

I bought 87U at first, but then returned it to buy 68U instead. Yea, the 87U is nicer and sexier design-wise. The wifi seems to be better on 87U.(well duh its faster than 68u)However, the signal strength was a bit better too.

What I really miss about 87U is the DPI, anti-virus protection. However, it was mentioned that this feature is coming to 68U.

CPU on 68U is pretty much like the one on 87U, just different clock speed. You can easily overclock 68U to 1Ghz and even to 1.2Ghz.

68U has much better 3rd party support, while 87U is only supported by merlin asuswrt and asuswrt atm. It might stay that way for a while because 87U has the separate hardware aka "blackbox" just for handling 5Ghz wifi and it would require other firmwares to be able to communicate with it.


Long story short, if you care not about wifi speed or 4x4x4 then definitely go for 68U.

Interesting you say this, that wasn't really the impression i had got from reviews.

I have been pretty happy with my N66U, but its wireless range drops off a bit at the furthest point of my house, and i have been tossing up on whether to get an AC68U which goes for the equivalent of US$175 here, however there is a deal on Sunday where i can get the AC87U for US$203.

I'm tempted by the 87U as it's design is considerably better than the AC68U (particularly for where i need to put it). If the wireless range actually is a bit better too, that may just push me over the edge.

Keep in mind that I haven't done any proper tests, its just how I felt. However, I was definitely getting better TX-rate on my macbook air in the same spot. It used to be ~800 Mbps now its ~500 Mbps. It could be because of the location of the antennas, 68U's antennas are located a lot higher, etc.

If you can get it for that price, then definitely go for it.
