Sometimes on this fw i lose 5Ghz, i see it but can't connect. Only router reboot can help.
Anyone have this issue ?

It happened to me once or twice but strangely enough only on my galaxy s10 phone. my iPad and laptop connect normally but not my android phone, restarting the phone didn't help only restarting the router.

I'll add that my event definitely dropped all 5.0 GHz clients as witnessed in the Wireless Log, including the AiMesh node, a Chromecast, and Android mobiles.

Yes it is an issue that a few people have reported with the AC86 however more people have had issues with the 2.4 Ghz radio.

Things that you can try:
1. Follow all tips for disabling some of the advanced WiFi options. Search this forum for tips/ suggestions on which ones. Most important probably is to select a fixed channel instead of letting router automatically choose its channel.
2. If you are using a fixed channel and it is in the high range i.e. 149 try using a lower channel such as 36. The opposite if currently using a low channel. Use 80 Mhz bandwidth.
3. Be sure you are using the most current Merlin firmware 384.14. I had issues with some of the earlier editions but since upgrading and changing channels my 5 Ghz connections have been rock solid.
4. If nothing else helps consider a "Nuclear Reset" then re enter all your settings manually.

Yes, two posts ago... right before the post inwhich I mention Asuswrt firmware quality issues:

I also found this strange log entry in my 86u

Code:

Just tried 81351 for a few days and got thousands of WLCEVENTD wlceventd_proc_event (386) < example , few spams per minute .

After 3 days this firmware droped my internet and was unable to connect until i rebooted router. Jokesus final blow cut my router head off until i revive it . haaa nice top tier product jokesus 3 days and its dead until u restart it with this jokeware.

And even that version is hopping through channels almost every hour (if you want to use single SSID/Smart Connect).. Asus could implement Smart Connect with user selected fixed channels (like Netgear has on Broadcom models).

Yes, plus 45713,7 Trend Micro consumes memory.

81351 is working here with separate SSIDs and fixed channels (preferred now) and no Trend Micro.

That's nice, but excuse me, I do expect from 150 EUR router (which is/was allegedly top of the AC line) such basic functionality as single SSID working without such issues (and reading ton of threads/posts which firmware build is at least stable).. the quality of Asuswrt firmware has gone south unfortunately.
I have now Netgear R7000P at the customer location with weeks uptime (same 5 Ghz WiFi Broadcom chipset as in RT-AC86U, albeit 3x3), Smart Connect is working with fixed channels (5GHz is DFS channel - it warns you that it can change when radar is detected, but stays so far), no problem with cca 15 devices connected.

If I were installing consumer networking equipment for customers, I would know what it could do before I installed it so that it would meet expectations. I would not install it for customers without knowing and accepting the trade offs (and any complaints).

I don't know where you got the idea that I installed untested device at the customer site, RT-AC86U is lying here on the shelf, I was just curious to test it.. I just compared "better" Asus to "inferior" Netgear (R7000P has previous CPU generation like RT-AC68U/R7000).

Sorry, just a mental jump in the wrong direction... it happens with piecemeal discussions online.

It's good you are testing the 86U (Asuswrt, in general)... I would not install it for a customer without knowing how not to use it.

Its a complete disgrace that it takes so long to make firmware that will just "work". I used OzarkEdge settings on 45717 and lucky it seems to have basic level of functionality when it comes to user experience ( no internet drops, kind of stable ping within games not perfect tho ) but the thing is i have to worry about security because newer firmwares with fixes will die after 3 days and only reboot will restore internet connection . Shame on you Asus that you cant make 1 decent firmware in years. The most ridiculous thing is that they promote it as gaming router where any tp-link for 10 euro i had was 100x more stable and better for gaming and could stand 1 year without issues. Apart from wifi range this router is complete trashcan.
