Closing Thoughts
As I said in the closing to Part 1, the RT-AC87U/R is an unfinished product, rushed to market when it should still be back in the lab being thoroughly debugged. If you want to put your faith in ASUS and Quantenna's ability to deliver on its "wave 2" 802.11ac features (1733 Mbps link rate and MU-MIMO), go ahead and give ASUS your money now. After all, being the first on your block to have a new toy is worth it, right?

This put me offabit, though it was a older review from this site. How is the router now after firmware updates?

Im looking for a new router and I can get the AC68U and the AC87U for the same price so thought ill look at the 87u.

Some have had good luck with the 87U, but others not. I can not go one day of uptime with it locking up and needing a power cycle. I have it on a nightly reboot and even then it sometimes locks up and needs to be power cycled. For me, the 87U was a total waste of $200. I'm on Merlin's latest firmware and will try one more version before I abandon this router for something that works.

My AC87U runs stable like a rock: See footer what I run on it and I never reboot it (unless a config change or firmware update demands it)!

My AC87U is also very stable. I have latest Merlin and a fan under it to keep it cool. The ipad, iphone and S9 are good. Once and a while my Nexus 5x has to be restarted. Pretty happy with it so far. Runs at 20% memory and 56C on the CPU.

had nothing but problems with mine- had a fan under it, several different firmware vers(merlins .2 seemed to work best) \, and continual reboot/perf problems. it is now a bridge and seems ok sofar. the 3100 that replaced it is running like a champ:)

i had 2 87u here for testing and i did notice that with the last few firmware updates they seemed to become laggy and slow as compared to earlier firmware , its almost like they where working too hard behind the scenes and this made the end user experience less with slow page loading etc

however the 68u is still going like a champ as is the rt-ac3200

The odd minor issue still exists but mine has now been running for 74 days without a reboot, during that time it has done around 320+ GB of internet traffic a month and even more from my NAS to assorted devices.

I have not had any problems. I bought the 87U to replace my DSL-N55U which was (is) a brilliant router. I am using my N55 in bridge mode to provide internet access to the 87U.

So far so good

Well I'm currently at 82 days, it'll be the last day before a reset but it is due to me deciding to try the latest release firmware out today 3.0.0.4.378.9529

I used to own an 87U and it worked fine. Never had any issues with it. The new owner also has never had any issues. Guess it has good luck.
