RT-AC87U official release

Got word from ASUS that the RT-AC87U official release is "late August". All that's available until then is the functionally identical RT-AC87R from Best Buy. And, of course, resold units on eBay at stupid prices....

Which is what I purchased 2 days ago. Why the model number distinction if it's functionally identical?

They are identical they just use the R because it's sold at a Retail outlet such as Best Buy. U or R no difference in hardware same beast.

Same hardware; simply made for bestbuy (so they don't have to compete on price on an exact sku match).

Howdy,

ASUS RT-AC87R and RT-AC87U are the same thing.

R model is sold at retail establishments
U model is sold at online vendors

Best Buy in the USA currently is selling the RT-AC87R. I believe they have a special arrangement to have it for sale before other vendors. They might have a 30 day head start or something.

Can someone tell me what 4x4 adapters Asus used for testing before releasing the RT-AC87R? From my understanding there are none. Asus please answer. I'm waiting on this one it should be good.

What in 3 to 5 years? AD25,000 routers will be out by then.
The client devices in and around my home are 802.11n, so my RT-N66U is sufficient.
To benefit 802.11ac, you shall have 802.11ac devices, with matching specs on both ends (router and clients).
Like 802.11n, the 802.11ac standard does not mandatory prescribe how much of the standard shall be implemented to carry the "802.11ac" label, so you shall thoroughly compare the mostly hidden specs to find out if client devices will match your router.
Most people will buy the RT-AC87 like we buy a fast car.
The router (like the car) has incredible specifications, but the clients end will limit the use (like the speed limits on most highways or speed bumbs will for your car).
Next year the RT-AC87 will be ancient device, in the wrong design and wrong color :)
Ok, nevertheless, the thing looks great. If I had to buy a new router, it would be it.

Only ASUS can answer for sure. But they stated in another thread that the first client for the AC87 will be out next month.

There are reference designs that could have been used. Also I have been told that there are MU-MIMO capable smartphones that are in the wild but have not yet had MU-MIMO enabled.
