Asus hasn't announced any release date yet. Maybe they will next week since it's Computex.

Based on what I see getting added in recent firmware code, my guess is, it won't be for at least a few months.

And when is a router "a beast"? I don't understand that term in regards to consumer electronics. I hear it used a lot, but I don't understand what gets a product a "beast" standing.

Article states "in development". So how could anyone know, including Asus?

Since u read the article do u know what date it was written ? [emoji23] almost 6 months

They could update the article if they wished to, so "their" last statement is "in design and development", so I can only assume that is their last public statement in regards to a timeline.

Update . Good luck with that

U could use something like " i got pissed over someone when he said beast router :( " [emoji23] lol

Looks the the 86r/u.. with the USB 3 port in the same location which leads me to believe it will have the same usb 3 and 2.4 ghz interference issues.

I remember at the time they said this might not be the final design, so don't put too much trust in that casing you see from January's picture. It could be vastly different once they release it.

Those of us who were around back in the day remember how the RT-N66U went through a lot of specification changes before the final release that we saw reach market. It even had a cooling fan in its earlier versions.

Someone in the comments with the name JJ(working for Asus development team) just said that any release of this router would be Q3 or Q4 of this year.

Forget about the Asus RT-AC87U, what about the new Asus RT-AC3200?

RT-AC3200 router

ASUS RT-AC3200 is the world's fastest tri-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi router that delivers combined data speeds up to 3200Mbit/s. The Broadcom® six-stream 802.11ac Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology delivers the ultimate internet experience in multi-user environments by providing maximum network speed. Additionally, RT-AC3200 features SmartConnect, which increases Wi-Fi performance by up to 200% by automatically selecting the ideal band for network clients depending on their location and needs. ASUS AiRadar with universal beamforming intelligently strengthens wireless connectivity to improve Wi-Fi coverage to network devices, ensuring greater signal stability, enhanced range, and optimal speeds.

The easy-to-use ASUSWRT graphical user interface of RT-AC3200 provides robust network control and optimization. Setup takes just 30 seconds, and the intuitive interface means even network newbies can enjoy its sophisticated features such as traffic monitoring and Adaptive Quality of Service (QoS) bandwidth management, while power users will love its IPv6 support, multiple wireless SSIDs and secure VPN access. AiProtection with Trend Micro provides total protection from external attacks as well as maintaining personal privacy. Adaptive QoS intelligently manages network traffic to automatically give each device and application optimal bandwidth so that everyone on the network has the best possible internet experience.

It seems like Asus is really pushing the router business these days, but one have to wonder if these devices actually have anything going for them? Asus RT-AC87U seems like a natural successor to Asus RT-AC68U, but what about this new RT-AC3200?

I for one find it very hard to believe that going haywire with the antenna configurations and adding more streams and bands will really benefit anyone. People are screaming for better coverage and range, especially on the 5.0GHz and not even crazier numbers in terms of theoretical throughput. But I guess mbps on the box is what selling and nothing else..

:D

I never knew about RT-AC3200

So is AC2300 dead now since AC3200 has been mentioned?

The two devices are quite different. AC3200/AC2300 does not tell the whole story.

For starter, the RT-AC87U will be able to provide up to 1700 Mbps to a single device, while the RT-AC3200 will only be able to provide up to 1200 Mbps to a single device.

So, if you only have one or two 802.11ac devices and need the maximum performance out of them, the RT-AC87U will remain a faster router (provided you have matching NICs, that is).

RMerlin, you are correct of course.

I jumped the gun saying the AC2300 is dead (half joking, but still...).

I want a true AC3200 6 stream MU-MIMO capable 10GBe router (10GBe on ALL ports) - that is what will 'kill' the AC2300.

More info on the RT-AC3200 here:

http://pcdiy.asus.com/2014/06/rt-ac3200-ultimate-802-11ac-6x6-router-computex-2014/

So what about the previously announced RT-87U? ACxxxx numbers represent the maximum throughput the networking product can handle. That doesn’t necessarily mean per-device, as the RT-AC3200 talks to multiple .ac and .n devices at full speed, rather than having to slow down to the slowest device on the network. Only the RT-AC87U provides 33% more area coverage and more per-client bandwidth (1700 versus 1300), however it only has one .ac band versus the RT-3200’s two.
When will this be available?

We are targeting a Q3 to Q4 release. Stay tuned for more information. This product is currently on product design and development.
