ASUS RT-AC87U: Slow Wireless Speed (54mbps) on Mac A/C wireless

Just set up a new RT-AC87U and am only getting a wireless link speed of 54 mbps??

All wired devices are connecting at 1gbps

• I'm using the most up to date asus firmware (had the router do this for me)
• Connecting to my 2013 Mac book pro with wireless AC.
• Same link speed at 5 feet and at 1 floor away (almost directly above)
• I've tried connecting on one then the other 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless frequencies
• I've rebooted both router and Mac several times.
• Mac connects to lynksys WRT1900 AC at 1gbps
• Mac connected to netgear router (which we replaced) at 200+mbps

I called asus tech support (who were very friendly and supportive) but they had me go to speedtest.net and test my speed through wireless... is this effective? Speed was the same from wireless and wired devices...

Does anyone know why this is happening?

54 Mbps indicates HT rates are not enabled. You need to have WMM enabled and use WPA2/AES encryption. Both of these should be the defaults. Are you getting 54 Mbps on both 2.4 and 5 GHz?

Try resetting the router to defaults and trying again.

I have the same problem, but I don't actually think it's a problem. Hold down the option key and click on the WiFi indicator on your Mac. For me it shows transmit rate 867, in spite of the fact that in the Network Utility it shows a link speed of 54. I definitely am transferring files at far above 54mbps, so I think it's a bug in the way network utility is reporting it.

Does this router give full access to the Qensana chip

I have read that the Qensana has not been actually fully turned on. Is this true and will a mid-2014 MacBook Pro really be able to take advantage of the Wave 2 features?
