I have a RT-AX56U with an external HDD on the USB3 port.
The WiFi file transfer rate with samba is at 18MB/s (download) and 7MB/s (upload).
Using ftp I get file transfer rates of 20-40MB/s (download) and 21MB/s (upload).
With my old router and the same HDD I got 15-20MB/s (download) and 10-15MB/s (upload).
The results are the same for Asuswrt and Merlin (384.18).
The file system is NTFS.

What can I do to improve the samba performance?

Something's definitely wrong with your setup, even on my old laptop that connects at 300mbps I easily get about 20MB/s when copying to the HDD over Samba. Did you try connecting another HDD?

Do you observe the same issue on 2.4G and on 5G WiFi ?

If 2.4GHz only: try setting the USB to work at USB2.0 speed, and check for the same issue
