This might be a stupid question...but is this an official firmware update for the BE88U? Does Asus generally wait before uploading on the site or rolling it out via the check for update function?

It is an official firmware from Asus. @Treadler mentioned here that it was available on the web router GUI via update function before it was uploaded to Asus' website.

Yes, occasionally there will be a delay from a few hours to a day or more between when the router update channel has the firmware update and when Asus's various support website country specific pages for a specific router model will have a link to manually download the firmware update. While typically more rare, sometimes the reverse happens; the website will have an update before the router update channel has it.

OTA update went smooth on my RT-BE88U, no issues so far.

Maybe my experience is a bit dated from the RT-AC68U times.
But, is there no reboot required anymore after firmware updates?

I was prompted to reboot after downloading the firmware from the above link. Perhaps OTA is different.

Maybe it reboots automatically as part of the OTA update?

After the firmware upgrade my Tesla does not see the RT-BE88U Wifi Access points anymore. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have factory default reset the router this morning but Tesla refuses to see the Wifi.

Tesla Wall Connector all happy here.

Was not able to setup DNS-over-TLS.
Had to install Merlin firmware to get it working

Apparently, this is an issue if the IoT guest network sharing the same VLAN is disabled.
So if you don't want to install Merlin's firmware, I guess your would just turn this to "On" within Guest Network Pro.
Read this tidbit within Merlin's change notes for 3006.102.2. Apparently they provided Merlin with the patch which is why it isn't an issue on that firmware, but ASUS have yet to implement it themselves...
