I just got the Asus RT-N66U router yesterday. So far, it has been great!! It has the .112 firmware. I see that the firmware is up to version .178. For you folks that have had the router for awhile, is it worth upgrading the firmware from .112 to .178, or should I just leave well enough alone?? Thanks.

Merlin's builds have the 64k nvram that's in the beta builds. If you have a lot of custom settings or scripts the router may crash, in which case you'd have to restore the router to factory settings.

Just to clarify that he means you would crash by running out of nvram in these scenarios if you use a 32 KB firmware like the Asus original firmware.

I would upgrade to the Asus stock firmware 178.

If you find the stock firmware does not fulfill all your needs then maybe pursue Merlins or maybe even Tomato.

Regardless whether you try .178 or RMerlin's .178.15 both are way much more mature / less buggy than .112.

I'm also still using the .112 version and everything is working great except for internal speed. I connected a USB HDD to the router and copying to and from the disc takes ages. Files are usually being transferred with 4 or 5 megabytes, which seems way too slow, especially seeing that I have already attained higher speeds with my internet connection.
Will an update to the latest firmware fix this? Or will it cause trouble somewhere else?

I just got mine on Friday, it also came with 112. I upgraded to Merlin's latest build right away. It is very solid and little things that are buggy are fixed in it. Plus you will want to start with 64 for when the next asus release comes out soon. It will be 64, but that upgrade will wipe your router if you have setup a 32kb version.

stock maybe better that shibby

I am running 3.0.0.3.178 stock now after running shibby 100 for a while.

I was running a 6in4 ipv6 tunnel with tunnelbroker.net and that was causing the router to reboot.

I think the stock has all the necessary features, and so far 6to4 is running without a problem. I haven't tried the 6in4 tunnel yet.

Another bonus for the stock is the guest wireless you don't have in tomato-shibby.

Let's see how it goes, but so far I am quite impressed.

The only thing I don't yet have working is the 3g backup. Something that needs to be done manually in shibby in the event of an outage.

That was probably caused by a memory leak that shibby fixed a few days ago - similar leak that was also affecting Asuswrt until build 157-ish.

I have a permanent 6in4 tunnel set on my RT-AC66U (also through Tunnelbroker, but using my own update scripts rather than Asus's DDNS), it's 100% stable here.
