Asus, when are you fixing parental control !!!

Other than having a problem setting the correct time on the router, the Parental Controls have worked well for me. My needs are simple and I just want to cut off internet access for my children at a given time during school time.

Merlin told me that the main reason he does not deal with the PC code is that Asus is changing it all the time. I don't know if that is still the case.

Don't forget to take their mobiles/cell phones off them too - many act as hotspots.

At least part of the problem was tracked down by makkie (the firewall rules aren't properly generated). I just didn't have time this week to test the latest patch he wrote for it, I'll eventually get to it.

I can tell you that despite what some folks might think, Asus are NOT ignoring PControl. They've fixed some issues recently, and was told they were aware of additional issues which they did intend to work on. So that means this is currently being looked at both by Asus, and by makkie and I here.

Patience. Software development isn't something that happens overnight.

I am a SW developer myself and I know that development does not happen overnight.
But the feature Parental Control is written in big letters on the box and that´s why i bought this router ... spending 120 EUR. I could have bought a TP-Link for 40 EUR with parental control ...
And then this feature does not work :(
What's the point filtering out web traffic related to a MAC address and a scheduled time ????

It depends what one expects when they read 'parental controls'. All I want is what I have quoted above, so it does work for me - perfectly. I do not censor what my children see on the 'net at all and have no desire to. Cannot see the point as they can access the internet from so many places and with so many different devices away from parental influence.

All I can say is that it does here. The only time I did have probs was when I could not get the router to keep the right time due to the strange way one sets Daylight Saving Time.

There is maybe a misunderstanding here: Parental Control does not work at all with the Asus FW.

I just installed the latest Merlin version and will see tonight at 22h if my kids are yelling or not ...

The latest patch from Makkie20 did resolve the PControl rules generation. With any luck, this was the main reason why some people had no problem with PControl, while others were unable to make it work reliably.

The patch will be included in the next release of my FW. If all things go well after that, I'll submit the patch to Asus for inclusion in the official FW.

I just released a beta build of my FW which includes Makkie2002's code. Can one of you having issues with PControl not working give it a try?

Click here for the discussion thread. For those new to my FW, the download info can be found in this thread.

Anyone tested that new PControl code yet? If I can get a few confirmations that it does resolve the issue people are complaining about, that will give weight to my request to have the fix integrated into the official firmware. Which mean you'll end up with a working PControl in the end ;)

i just ordered n66u waiting for it to ship, soon as I get it i'll be putting your firmware on and i'll let you know right away :) thanks for the great work you do to help us newbs!

I just tested parental control, it worked perfect. Kicked the desired computer/phone off at a specific time.

Thanks for the feedback.

Did you previously run Asus's FW, or was that your first attempt at using PControl?

Yep all good here!!! Absolutely stellar work!!! PControl seems to work perfectly well..... previously running .134.32 FW (N66U). I will keep you posted as the .33 beta "breaks in" --- it's the least I could do.

Just recently joined the forum to personally thank you for all your fine work. Been running Merlin builds for a year now.

Cheers!

Thank you for the feedback. Was is previously broken for you before you switched to this version?

I just got the n66u today, so i didn't have a chance to test before hand.

Just tested it again. It seems to kick the phone off the network but the computer does not get kicked off now. Hmm. It seems that when the computer keeps a connection open like a skype call/video call it wont kick the computer off at the time you set it too.

Yeah, that's a separate issue that's still present (established connections don't always get closed down as the time threshold is reached). Not sure why personally, since the rule order does seem right to me (PControl rules being processed before the SPI rules).
