I had to to factory reset it and then applied the firmware and this seemed to have worked.

I did restore it with a saved backup config file. The router still seems to work.
I can't get past this. Factory reset, then apply configuration from when it wasn't working puts you /exactly/ were you were before you reset it (when it wasn't working, so now it won't again all the same).

I have a new PC with a Realtek 2.5Gb ethernet and Killer AX1675 wifi module and the speed crash keeps happening on both. I have installed the latest official firmware for the Asus. I have noticed that Core 1 is at 99%.

What is happening???

After you install the firmware, Hard Reset it to its default settings and configure it minimally from scratch... and test again.

FW Reset FAQ

Reset button/webUI Restore/node removal - clears settings in NVRAM; reboot restores fw defaults from CFE

Hard Reset via WPS button/webUI Restore+Initialize - also clears data logged in /jffs partition
