I have not gone back as far as RC2-3, but I have not been able to get my RT-AC66U B1 running as a node at all, on neither RC2-6 nor RC2-7 firmware for RT-AC68U. I appreciate that this is a late response to your post (but at least it shows I have now read the thread, further to my
slap on the wrists earlier )
I have been trying this with a new GT-AC2900 (that I couldn't resist acquiring after I got sucked in by this thread!) as the AIMesh router which, in all my attempts, has been flashed to the same RC as the hopeful node. Any tips welcome please!
More info:
I have been following the AIMesh setup guide on the Asus website (
here). This instructs not to configure the node device at all after its factory reset. However, I see that the RT-AC66U B1 (with wither RC2-6 or 7) offers a wizard after factory reset allowing it to be set as an AIMesh node, so I tried that too. When I reconnect my PC to the GT-AC2900 (when instructed by the wizard), the GT-AC2900 seems to register that I have just come form the RT-AC66U B1 (ref. screen1.jpg), but thereafter fails to connect (ref. screen2.jpg):

I have tried all this many times time with devices 0.5-3m apart and also with and without wired backhaul enabled on the GT-AC2900.
Two questions I'd be grateful to know the answers to:
- I notice that, after factory resets, default IP of RT-AC66U = 192.168.1.1 and GT-AC2900 = 192.168.50.1. Should one of these be changed, e.g. to get them on the same subnet, or does it not matter?
- Is my factory reset method correct? For both devices I:
- start with device off
- hold WPS button
- switch device on
- When Boost Key light goes off (RT-AC2900) or power light goes flashes (for RT-AC66U B1), I release the WPS button.
In both cases I successfully revert to default SSIDs, but maybe there is more to it?
Thanks!
