Release firmware does not last beyond 2 days where DDNS module fails hard and Port Forwarding stops working. PPPOe disconnects 2-3 times a day. At first I thought it was my ISP who is at fault. But then a team of FTTH specialists visited my place and they checked the Fiber at every point. My ONU shows -19dB power and ISP's OLT also shows -18.9dB. This is actually optimal for FTTH deployment. But to rule out the ONU (FTTH modem) issue, they replaced it with brand new one and put it under bridge mode. Still same issue of several PPPOe disconnects per day.

Then I removed my Asus RT-AX88U and put a $20 TP-Link router in it's place....lo-and-behold.... TP-Link held proper 23hr PPPOe sessions for entire one month without fail. At this point it was clear that RT-AX88U has broken PPPOe implementation. There are several similar complaints on this forum. The TP-Link also did not miss to resolve DDNS even once and I was able to access Remote Desktop and CCTV cameras without fail at all times. However, RT-AX88U's DDNS fails to resolve dynamic IP once 2-3 days. So router's homepage also becomes inaccessible from WAN. This happens on V1 and V1.1 of RT-AX88U and behaviour is same with 2 different ISPs at home and at office.

I am beta testing this thing for 1.5 years and for such expensive plastic, it feels as if I got hoodwinked.

Nope

Interesting. On my AX88u, with my cable modem/router in bridge mode, after a couple weeks (sometimes a few days) it goes into "no internet" mode. Rebooting the modem doesn't help, restarting a number of services on the router doesn't help either. So, I tried something. I put the cable modem/router back into router mode, turned off all the wifi/etc, and added a reserviced DHCP for my AX88u with a 365 day lease. Then added my router IP to the DMZ... and low and behold no "no internet" error in months. Not saying this is related to your PPPOe issue, but having something else keep you connected to the internet is a work around, yes. I haven't tried going back with any of the 386 builds... but 384.19 from Merlin did still do this.

I think the issue is related. I also get no internet issue but very rarely. Got it 3 times in 1.5 years and had to factory reset my RT-AX88U each time to get going. But haven’t got it since I started using 386 beta firmware. The RC2-B8 is the first firmware which has shown tangible improvement when it comes to stability but 12 days stability is not enough. It needs to be 24x7 365 days as router is something we keep on 24x7.

Can the power setting like in the "wireless"-"professional" settings be changed in the node to adjust the output power of the node in AirMess 2? Can this be done via ssh if not by the web interface?

Thanks

Thanks for RC2-B9
I am doing factory reset and keep an eye for PPPOe disconnects.

5 minute impressions:
  • Boot up speed has gone back to 384 levels and GUI is accessible immediately on 100% reboot completion.
  • GUI is more responsive and not glitching out or getting stuck.

May I ask if there's a chance that in AP mode there might ever be the possibility of having vlan tagging for the guest network? I really like the XT8s but not having that limits it's usability in AP mode, for me at least.

Thank you @ASUSWRT_2020 ! I can confirm the fix for:

5. Fixed RT-AC88U/3100 ethernet backhaual bugs.

...this works now fine on my end!

Best, Sebastian

@ASUSWRT_2020, thanks for posting this latest revision, but I don't see the file for the RT-AC5300 posted yet. When do you anticipate it being available, please?

@sanke1 Do you know how to reproduce this issue? Maybe it related to the recently upnpd code merge.

RT-AC5300, dirty upgraded from B8 to B9. It seems that when IoT devices are connected to the Guest Network 1 (on 2.4GHz), internet connection gets disconnected -- internet status changed to disconnected. Same problem in B7 and B8.

@ASUSWRT_2020 Is this a known issue in your bug tracker? Nobody has acknowledged this, nor told me I got it wrong, nor provided advice / help to troubleshoot it more.

@ASUSWRT_2020 In 9.0.0.4_386_41157-gd618756, AX86U, Bandwidth monitor doesn't work properly(very low value), when QOS is OFF or Adaptive QOS is ON.

@ASUSWRT_2020 thanks for this latest RC2-B9, smooth “dirty” upgrade on my 4 X RT-AC68U units in AP mode, 1 x Parent and 3 X Nodes.

Questions:-

* How do I turn off the LEDs on the main Parent unit? I can see how to do it on the Nodes (in 2 places actually)?

* Should turning off the LEDs now stick as OFF when you Reboot? I think it still doesn’t? Is this a bug?

* Like a few commenters here, wondering if there is any prospect of Guest Networks using VLANs so that even with Parent in AP mode they are isolated, but can still access Internet?

Thanks!

My Configuration:
  • AiMesh Router: AX88U 9.0.0.4_386_41157-gd618756 + 2 x AiMesh Nodes: AC86U 9.0.0.4_386_41157-gd618756
  • Backhaul (Priority:"Auto", Type:"Wired"), Cisco SG100D 8-Port Gigabit Switch from Router to Nodes, ISP: 1 Gbps Fibre
My personal SOP to Upgrade from Merlin 386.1_alpha4 -> Stock RC2-B9 9.0.0.4_386_41157:

(1) Upgrade AiMesh Nodes:
  • Administration -> Upgrade Firmware -> Select and Upgrade AiMesh Node (One Node at a time)
  • AiMesh -> Topology -> Select AiMesh Node -> Remove Node (One Node at a time to Factory Reset Node)
(2) Upgrade AiMesh Router:
  • Administration -> System -> Select “Format JFFS partition” & “Enable JFFS custom scripts and configs” -> Apply
    • (I prefer to start everything from scratch - don’t do this if you prefer to preserve anything from JFFS partition)
  • Reboot Router
  • Administration -> Upgrade Firmware -> Select and Upgrade AiMesh Router
  • Administration -> Restore/Save/Upload Setting -> Factory Default - Restore (Initialize)
(3) After Full Factory Reset of AiMesh Router / Nodes, I tried to leave NVRAM using Stock FW default values, except with the following changes:
  • AiProtection - Enable
  • Wireless:
    • 2.4 GHz: Fixed Channel Bandwidth 20MHz, Fixed Control Channel: 11, Roaming Assistant, Explicit / Universal Beamforming: Disable
    • 5.0 GHz: Fixed Channel Bandwidth 80MHz, Fixed Control Channel: 149, Roaming Assistant: Disable
  • WAN DDNS: Using Asus DDNS Service with Let’s Encrypt
  • VPN Servers:
    • OpenVPN works with MacBookPro Tunnelblick 3.8.5beta01, iPhoneXsMax iOS OpenVPN Connect 3.2.2
    • IPSec works with MacBookPro & iPhoneXsMax Native Configurations
    • Instant Guard works with iPhoneXsMax iOS Instant Guard 1.0.9
(4) Add AiMesh Nodes
(5) Reboot AiMesh Network
  • AiMesh -> System Settings -> Reboot (AiMesh Router & Nodes)
I have been running smoothly for about 2 (Edit :)) over 27 hours. Thank You :)

@sanke1 Do you know how to reproduce this issue? Maybe it related to the recently upnpd code merge.

I see the same trace during restart of my RT-AC88U device.

Just installed RC9 on-top of RC8. I was pretty stable on RC8 so lets hope this works just as well.
