New Around Here
Hi!
I'm looking for an Intel Atom board with WoL and RAID support (by the way: what would you recommend: software or hardware RAID?).
Furthermore: How much memory is needed for a NAS which manages two HDDs (encrypted) run under Windows Server 2008.
Thank you for your answers and recommendations.

I have an Intel Mini-ITX Atom motherboard. Running Win 7 very nicely, integral graphics for 1650 wide LCD.

Only issue is that it has but two SATA ports, and one IDE. GigE. One PCIe slot to add more. So I have an IDE DVD drive and two hard disks. No on-board RAID.

This is by no means a complete answer to your question, but I have some experiences with WOL.

Those are: I've found it tricky as the devil to get to work the way you think it should. Sometimes WOL works. Sometimes it doesn't. Worse yet, the fixes are not always the same.

I'm putting my server in a modestly inaccessible location - a detached garage - and it would be a pain to walk out and reset/reboot/etc. it. So I was dealing with pretty much the same question - how to get it to reboot, and in my case, turn on and off, remotely.

My solution was to get a LAN managed AC power outlet device, the IP Power 9258T (no, I don't sell them or work for anyone who does :) ) which gave me both the LAN management and the ability to really, no fooling, turn off the AC power.

Shutting down by cutting off AC power is a drastic step. Sometimes necessary, but drastic. So I came up with some hacks that let me tell the AC power box to fake pressing the power and reset buttons. It requires some skills to do the AC wiring safely, but otherwise it's low cost and simple.

The how-tos are on my server blog.
