AX86U nest thermostats not connecting - common problem

Set the Modulation Scheme to MCS 7 (802.11n) on the 2.4g band. That may correct your issue. My older HP printer would not connect until I made that change.

I finally got everything working by removing Merlin , returning to stock firmware (latest version) and doing a Hard factory reset on the router. I left the nest completely Alone. The issue was 100% with the router firmware/settings on it. I have also not changed any of the default settings with the router post reset ( besides SSID naming and passwords) and everything just worked perfectly. I’m not sure exactly what on the router was causing the problem, but it had to be some settings and/or the firmware.

At some point I’ll try and reinstall Merlin and keep current settings as that will eliminate Merlin (by itself) as causing the issue.

This is an interesting thread as I have been experiencing some strange issues with the latest Merlin 386.2 Betas in my network. I have problems with Ring Cameras and a Nest Camera not wanting to connect to my RT-AX86U nodes and often devices seem to prefer to connect to my RT-AX88U main router. When they are connected I see poor throughput on 2.4Ghz which impacts the picture quality on my cameras - again I think this is more than just a wireless media issue., but definitely related to the connections on 2.4Ghz.

I was thinking my problems are Firewall and DHCP related as I sometimes see them associated to WiFi but not showing connected. I have performed a factory reset a couple of times so it's not a hangover from previous build.

I'm running Asus stock firmware on my nodes, but Merlin on the RT-AX88U. I will try switching my entire environment back to stock (with a reset to defaults).

Nice... I'm going to order one to power a Honeywell heat only digital thermostat that runs on two AAA batteries on a two wire system but it has a power input for 24v. This would be better than having to replace the batteries every two to three years.
If you are handy you can fish the wire in the wall to a basement and plug it in out of sight.

It's also good for a tester and backup plan.

My nest is working fine on AX86U with 386.2 beta 3 - it is on guest network 1 but there was an issue around 386.2 alpha 2 (I think) with corrupt firewall rules. None of my nest or ring devices could connect to internet if I prevented local network access, but they had dhcp leases and showed in device list.

Good suggestions. I'll remember those wiring fishing poles for when I have to upgrade to Cat 8 and run the cable through the walls. This system is running on an analog thermostat right now but I want to switch to the digital which I already bought. The analogue one is notorious for large temperature swings of overheating and then not coming on until its too cold. Besides the two wires... the extra wiring for the 24v power is already there running down to the heater and there is an AC outlet nearby too. I just need to sort it out and hook it up. After this thread maybe I should just install a Nest thermostat instead of the Honeywell. ;)

The Honeywell should work just fine, I would give that a try before rushing to the more expensive Nest on a Heat Only system.
Just remember that the newer ones require programming steps be input for your type of heating source. (access sub menu)
Have the Manual handy.

I'm going to stick with the Honeywell. I was kind of joking about getting the Nest for this Heat Only system. It would be cool though being able to control the thermostat through your phone.

The Honeywell RTH6580WF: adjust and program your RTH6580WF WiFi 7-Day Programmable Thermostat from your smartphone.

My local utility provider offers a $75 instant rebate on this retail $100 thermostat.
So it's $25 plus tax and shipping.

Check your utility co. for similar rebates.

If it works with the AX86U I'd be good with it. :p

...and shouldn't this thread have the "Solved" label on it now since the solution was found by the OP?

I created an account to reply to this thread. I also had a problem with my AX56U working with my Nest Thermostat. Constantly throughout the day I'd check the Nest app and the Thermostat would be 'Offline for 7 hours' or 'Offline for 47 Minutes' seemingly randomly disconnecting throughout the day. Despite trawling through forums such as this one and reddit and tweaking various settings (RTS and DTM Interval seemed to help for about 1 day but could be a coincidence) I couldn't get the Nest to stay connected. It worked fine for 1+ years with my standard Virgin media router. However someone above recommended just factory defaulting all settings again which I have now done, and it seems to be working ok (checked various times over the last couple of hours and it's connected everytime). Not sure what settings I'd changed along the way to break it but the out-of-box settings seem ok so far so thankyou to whoever recommended doing that
