I'm still using my old n66u and it does what I need it to except for periodically dropping the 2.4 band during congested bandwith hours. I'm in a 1200 sq. ft. apartment and unfortunately the router sits next to our two desktops at the far other end of the apartment from a bedroom where I often use the WiFi.

I've had my eye on the ac86u for a replacement, waiting for the price to come down. B&H has it on sale now for $160. I'm tempted to go for it but I'm wondering about future proofing. The ac86u is getting a bit old now and new standards are not far off.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are having a good experience with current router. If the current router supports the highest 802.11 level of your devices, then just leave as is until you get a device that supports a higher 802.11 standard.

dont mix it with 5 years old RT-AC68U and its versions.
If you can live with yours for the moment wait for AX88U going cheaper or coming similar ones for a price around 200$.

Old . It's one of their newest models. It was only released a year ago.

Ooops. You (and Grisu) are right. My bad. Apparently I have been transposing the 68u in the opening text of that review #3 over there on the right sidebar into 86u for some time now. And believe me, I do know the difference between the two.:cool::cool:

I just ordered it or I put in my cart. There closed until tomorrow afternoon in observance of a religious holiday. Replacing my AC68U. Don't really need it just want it.:)

I've gone from a N66U to an AC68U and now an AC86U. All running Merlin firmware and all great routers, but the improved spec each time has been noticeable and I'm really pleased with my move to the AC86U.

It may be the 86u BF price, grab one, I did at Newegg.
