Back to the original firmware, obliged to reconfigure all nodes ?

I'm new here, so first of all, thanks administrators and creators of this forum and the very greatful informations available here !
I have two little questions for you.
For my two ASUS 68U, I want to be back to the original ASUS Stock firmawre, unfortunately for the AIMesh function. I'm in 384.8_2 of Merlin fw.
Will I have to reconfigures all my nodes (70... :-( ) after the back of the original firmware ?
It's very important for me, I really need to be sure because I have a domotic system and it would take a while if I had to...

Moreover, the procedure is to flash with the update classic tab, isn't it ?

A reset is recommended when moving from Merlin to stock or the other way around.

Adding an AiMesh node requires the node to be factory fresh. However there is zero config allowed or possible on the nodes to it’s no big deal, all config is managed from the master router. So while you need to reconfigure that one from scratch, the rest are easy 30 seconds to add jobs.

Flash AiMesh firmware onto all routers. Reset/Initialize all routers to factory defaults. Configure the AiMesh router (root node). Add the remote node(s) from the router GUI. See my install notes.

If you define new SSIDs, you will need to create new wireless client connections. If troubleshooting wireless client connections, you may want to forget and recreate existing connections to purge any lingering client side conditions.

Finally, the AC1900/AC68/AC66 B1 do not yet support Smart Connect node band steering, so you will likely want to use separate SSIDs for each band, such as Bertrand-50 and Bertrand-24. You will then not realize simpler single SSID usage such as Bertrand, assuming it works for your wireless clients. Otherwise, switching to using a single SSID would require you to recreate all wireless client connections.

I absolutely not want to use a new SSID, I want to keep the SSID (2.4Ghz, 5Ghz disabled now) of my current router (I have not added my new AC68U router), to not have to redefine very wifi clients
I thought I just have to create a new SSID on 5ghz for communication between my 2 routers...

In the future, AC68 will be able to use this "Smart Connect" functionnability ?

You don’t have to define any new SSID for router<>router, it is all done automatically.
Just create your same SSID after reflash, then add the AiMesh node (the node automatically pulls all config including the SSID from the main router).

All of your ~70 clients will never know anything happened.


For splitting 2.4/5 SSID, this is up to you, I would just leave it the same as you have now if it is working.

No, Smart Connect will not be added to routers that do not already support it.

Last question, am i obliged to connect my 2 AC68U Aimesh routers with ethernet cable ?
I have read that on some forum...

You can do Wi-fi or Ethernet backhaul. Once connected you can set either option on the node config.

If you do Wi-fi then some bandwidth will be used and not available for client, but most will not notice this unless you have 200+Mbps internet.

You can define any SSID you want when you configure a router.

Most people use 5 GHz for much better performance. I've never tried using AiMesh without both radios/bands enabled. You may need to enable both radios to add an AiMesh node. If so, then you would need to define a SSID for 5 GHz but you don't have to use it, and may be able to turn it OFF after adding the node.

If you use a wireless backhaul between the nodes, you will get much better performance with the 5 GHz radio enabled, assuming the nodes are within 5 GHz range.

If you use a wired backhaul between the nodes, also maintaining a wireless backhaul will allow AiMesh to use it (self-heal) if something should happen to the wired backhaul.

ASUS has said here that they are considering how to add Smart Connect to the 68U. But I would not count on it.

I suggest you get your AiMesh working with a basic router configuration first before adding advanced configurations... to save time and trouble if you decide to start over, which is always a possibility.
