No, the ones I was talking about are Windows based. There are some good ideas posted above that may suit you better, bit for my purposes, a backup image taken every 6 months is all I need. Takes about 5 minutes. I grab copies of all my device configuration files on this schedule too.

If you're only interested in backing up and restoring files for use on the router then tar would be the best choice IMHO because it will preserve all the relevant permissions. But bear in mind that if the underlying filesystem is not a native Unix one (like NTFS) then there is no guarantee that any of the non-Unix properties will be preserved should you subsequently want to plug it back into a PC. That is because of the limitations of the router's driver for that filesystem.

I think /jffs is not generally in-use all the time, so restoring it should be as easy as using rsync backwards and rebooting. I'm thinking I'd be able to ./rc.unslung stop and restore /entware and ./rc.unslung start to restore the flash drive. I guess we'll find out when and if that happens.
But surely in this scenario there are no files in the /entware directory yet because you haven't restored them. So there's no need to stop entware because it won't be running.

What I had thought about in the past was doing a blue/green setup. Why? B/C if I screw up an update and take down the internet during prime time, the howls will begin!

So I'd flash/update router blue with current FW and JFFS and leave green alone. Then next time I'd flash router green with current FW and sync/copy blue's JFFS. Yeah it takes 2 identical routers which is feasible, especially if you can find some used.

I just cannot figure out the best way to do that automatically.

How did you install scp or ftp?

Maybe with either of those on I can simply tar then sync the JFFS setup off using mobaxterm or beyond compare to my laptop? Thanks.

How good is the built in AiCloud Sync, using Dropbox and then one-way synching only.
Would that be secure and an option. I have never used it but that might work.

Thanks! I do not know. I'm not sure I'd trust AiCloud Sync but that's just me. I was thinking more of FTP/SCP the info off to my PC, timestamping it with a file name into a OneDrive folder and then letting it take care of getting it off premises. :)

That's why flashing takes place around 5:00 am when I'm awake and no one else is. :)
