New Around Here
Hi,

Old fart here trying to build something I've never even touched, let alone assembled, before. So I humbly ask for help / assistance / suggestions.

I've just bought Asus DSL-AC68U modem/router and Synology DS716+II NAS. I couldn't decide should I post this in to Asus, Synology or some other sub-forum, so I posted it here. Please move to correct address if necessary.

Goal: To store all my data (documents, pictures, videos and music) to NAS and to be able to access it (all) from home and from abroad (through Internet). Devices that I'll use to access the data include Windows 10 laptops, Windows 10 desktop PC, android tablets and (possibly) android and wp10 smart phones. The thing is.. I'd like to do this as securely as possible, given my very limited knowledge of these things.

I do not need to be able to "tweak" the NAS from outside of my home, but I'd like to be able to access any data stored in to it. In addition to this I'd like to set up limited user account that can access only certain folders from abroad. For this the user will be using Windows PC.

I used to be "advanced home user", build my own computers and even "fine tune" them a bit, but that was back in the 90's. Nowadays, or should I say at the moment, I barely know how to pop a DVD in to PS3.. So I need some help

Few questions I have in mind include:

- If I have understood correctly, DSL-AC68U is equipped with OpenVPN server, and can also act as a client (I have PIA account. The thing is, I have used their app, never actually used the OpenVPN properly)?

- Synology comes with few different options how to use it remotely (QuickConnect / EZ-Internet etc)?

- Would it be easier / wiser to access the home network through OpenVPN server that would be running in router, or just skip the OpenVPN thing and access the NAS through some option Synology is offering?

- I also want, from time to time, to use PIA when using Internet. I have PIA client installed in my machines, and I'll just turn it on when I need it. Should I continue to do this, or would it make sense to make the router connect to PIA so that any device going to Internet from home network would use it all the time, or will this cause problems (with accessing NAS from abroad)?

I've planned to take a backup of the NAS to external USB drive from time to time. Actually 2 different drives I'll rotate. They are stored well away from the NAS, and I think this will do for me.

At first I'll stick 4G USB stick into Asus. I will have open/public IP that will change from time to time. Later I'll most likely have DSL connection, that's why I bought DSL-AC68U instead of RT-AC68U.

NAS will be connected to Asus via cable. All other devices will use WLAN.

Please push me in to right direction. Thanks!

To achieve your stated goal, you need high ISP speeds (both download and upload). What are your actual ISP speeds that you can achieve? With the upload being more important to accessing your data over the 'net.

Hi,

At the moment, using 4G mobile connection, I get around 40-50 Mbit/s in and 20-30Mbit/s out. That's measured from my laptop using my mobile phone's hotspot. Router is still in it's box, since I'm trying to figure out how to set things up properly from the start.

If, and when, I go for "fixed connection" I have different options (100/10, 250/50, 1000/100 and so on) depending how much I'm willing to spend monthly.

I wont be streaming video from NAS through Internet or anything like that. Mostly use from abroad will be browsing through pictures and text documents.

Hi Dogi,

IMHO: having your NAS double as a VPN -server might not be the safest option, i would use the VPN options in your router. In you first post you mention that configuring a VPN is not your field of expertise, maybe the safest option is to have your NAS sync your documents and pictures with a Google drive, Onedrive or Dropbox(?) account, giving you access to your files, without having to worry about VPN's and network security. See this link: https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/help/CloudSync/cloudsync

Cheers, b.
