Hi All and Merry Christmas :D

Just joined the forum although I've visited here many times before. I need some help which I hope you guys can help me with.

I've already read the "How To Choose the Right NAS for You" page but it didn't really help me I'm afraid but please do bare in mind I have never owned or used a NAS before.

Let me start off by explaining what I need to achieve; I have a Squeezebox Touch which seems to struggle playing music from a locally attached USB Powered Hard Drive (Seagate Freeagent Go 320GB), sometimes it plays ok but most of the times it randomly stops playing and disconnects and tries to reconnect but fails to do so. I have tried with a mains powered hard drive with the same results.

I've been told that using a NAS to stream music to the Touch over the network is the way to go. My collection mainly consists of FLAC files and some MP3's and I would connect directly to the router rather than WiFi for better performance.

Since I'm going down this route I've also decided to buy the Dune TV-101 Media Player so I need a NAS that can stream AVI and MKV files to the Dune (please note I don't need to stream music and video at the same time).

I've done a lot of research on the net and realise that installing Squeezebox Server on certain makes of NAS is not user friendly specially for those who lack Linux knowledge like myself.

The only two option that I can see for me are the QNAP TS-219P II and the Synology DS212+ both of which support the installation of SB Server and they are also spec'd pretty good running a 2GHz Marvel Processor and 512MB DDR3 RAM.

The advantage of the 219P II is that it has slightly lower power consumption compared to the DS212+ but only by 2 watts which is nothing really.

But the DS212+ has a larger fan (9cm compared to 219P's 7cm) which means in theory it should be quieter and move more air, it has USB 3.0 ports which is missing from the 219P and IMO I think the DS212+ looks a lot nicer than the boring looking 219P.

Pricewise both are about the same at around £250-270.

Which one would be the most user friendly in terms of installing Squeezebox Server?

Which one would be the most reliable for my main criteria which is to stream FLAC/MP3 files to the Logitech Touch?

In your opinion have I selected the two best NAS for my needs or is there something better suited to my needs that you can suggest?

Please do also note that although my music collection isn't huge (probably 10'000 tracks) it would be nice to have a NAS which performs well and doesn't feel slugish browsing files etc.

Something that's also a little future proof would be ideal.

One last thing, I only need the NAS without any hard drives as I already have a few that I can use.

Hope to hear from your guys soon as I've got itchy fingers and just want to get one asap! I'd be very grateful.

Cheers guys.

Both QNAP and Synology have interactive on-line demos where you use their product, remotely. I've read here that some say Synology's user interface is somewhat better.
