Hi all,
Have been running my network for awhile, but trying to get a bit more advanced (and upgrading my trusty Dlink 655). Didn't find definitive answer searching, so my question now is which devices should I plug into where (switch or router), and does it matter?
I have a server running mythbuntu backend (BE), with two frontends (FE) - one wired, other wireless. Tuners are SiliconDust HDHomeRun (original and 10/100) and HDPrime. Also have wired network printer (10/100). So I am over the 4 wired devices of the router. Had a Dlink 5 port switch, but upgraded to an 8 (future expansion within my house) - D-Link GO-SW-8G.
Would the media devices be better served plugged into the router, with the switch serving the 10/100 devices (printer and HDHomeRun), or would there be benefits the other way around? And also, what about the gigabit/not mix (think not an issue with the newer hardware that will "autosense" but can't confirm, and why I am asking)?
Have FiOS (via Actiontec MI424WR) connected to DLink DIR-857. I need the following connected to either the router (DIR857) or the switch (GO-SW-8G) -
myth server backend (gig)
myth frontend (gig)
SiliconDust HD Prime (gig)
SiliconDust HD Homerun (10/100)
HP printer (10/100)
Any benefits or issues either way? To the media server, one wireless (5GHz N) myth frontend connects (if that matters). I was hoping to ensure highest thoroughput for all devices. Outside of the above, I have two-three wireless laptops, a wireless desktop, and a tablet that connects to the network.
Sorry for the length (I can babble.. double thanks if you are still reading!). Didn't find what I was looking for when searching.
P.S. Should I put an additional question about the wireless setup in the General Wireless Discussion, or in the Wireless Buying Advice? There's not a specific "Network Setup" forum, and want to be sure I don't crosspost, as well as am in the right place for best response! Thanks again!!
