OP @Poseidon, just saw the Asus EA-N66 refurb on sale at newegg today for $45 after $10 rebate & free ship. It's dual band, not sure of exact spec differences between it and the other unit you were looking at.

Thanks for the heads up. The main difference is that the RP-N53 offers concurrent dual band while the EA-N66 is either 2.4 or 5.

The reviews for the EA-N66 aren't really that great. I've even found a bunch of returns at my local Fry's Electronics store.

Have you tried to setup the RP-N53 synchronized with the same SSID,password and channel yet?

The problem with using a different SSID is if your devices are already connected to a network that is barely operational but still kind of reaches the remote area, your devices won't disconnect and reconnect to the 2nd SSID that has a much stronger signal - instead, they'll just have very slow or no connection.

That's my primary reason for looking for a solution that works by just extending the same SSID's range. I can't believe how complicated this is - I even set up dd-wrt to do this on a 2nd router but can't get it to work.

My router is RT-AC66U, and I'd even buy a 2nd one if the Media Bridge mode worked this way, but I don't think it even supports WPA2.
