New Around Here
Hi,

I own a small business for digitizing media such as photos, videos, film, etc. We have about 30 desktop PCs constantly ingesting media files to various NAS servers (Synology 409+, 1511+, 2411+). Our office has grown over the years and we've expanded our space. To grow our network, what started as a router and a couple 4-port switches has become about 10-12 switches (4-port and 8-port) daisy-chained around the 2,000 square foot office. They are all gigabit, including the router. We've noticed that when sending large files between systems that are far apart on the 'tree' of switches it causes some serious network lag. Since we usually are capturing media from each system directly to an NAS on the same switch, this normally is not an issue.

But, I'm wondering what the more seasoned pros around here might recommend. From my reading it seems I should have only a handful of 12-port switches, or even one 30-port switch and buy long cables and run them individually to each system. That's a hell of a lot of cable for our setup, so I'm hoping there's something simpler that will resolve the issue of sending large files between systems on different switches without the lag.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you all for your great information on this site. I've relied on it heavily.

Ideal situation.....
One central switch
Each PC has a run to it
Servers directly into it
Router into it
Access Points directly into it.

Recommend HP ProCurve.

All communications remain with that switch, full speed of its backplane.

As soon as you start daisy chaining another switch off it....performance will suffer for nodes connected to that secondary switch.

If you MUST daisy chain switches....ensure it's never more than 1. In other words...say for one floor of a building, all runs go to the end of one hall, put a switch in there..that switch goes directly to a main switch.
Same for other floors.
Servers go into main switch, router, APs.

Thanks for the response. If I am running long cables from my 10 switches to a main hub that might work out okay. I was planning to go with an 'unmanaged' switch, since I don't feel confident I will know the best settings for a managed one.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll check out those ProCurve switches.
