I heard back from Asus - they are aware of the GRO issues, and the developers are looking into it.

I sent an Email to one of my contacts at Asus about the GRO related crashes. Will keep everyone posted on what I get back.

In the mean time, you can switch to Asuswrt-Merlin once I release the next version based on build 220 (no ETA at the moment), as I compile it with GRO disabled, fixing those crashes.
Awaiting Asuswrt-merlin based on the 220 version with baited breath. No pressure though. :)

Port forwards are saved in vts_rulelist. QoS rules are in qos_rulelist.

You can get the whole list of settings by running:

To save it to a file, assuming you have a USB disk mounted as sda1:

You can selectively restore many settings by using the same method (as long the format hasn't changed between firmware versions, of course).

Thanks for that, but what is the command for restoring from said settings.txt? Any way to import just the vts_rulelist part in to nvram when you upgrade/wipe the settings?

Thanks again, linux noob here ;) (Although I did manage to set up a file server with mint 13 if that counts :p)

AiCloud breaks port forwarding

Hi,

Been here for a long time but first time to post...

After updating to this firmware and enabling AiCloud I noticed that port forwarding stopped working.
Any one with the same problem or a work around to this?

Thanks for the help.

Usually happens if you failed to reset your settings to factory default as required by the upgrade to build 220.

I believe it should be another thing, I`'ve reset it twice to factory settings and input all the settings again.
Port forwarding works as long as as AiCloud is disabled, as soon as it is enabled port forwarding stops working and I've disabled it again making port forwarding fine.
Do you really believe it is a problem with the Factory settings?

Must be something else with your settings, since I have no problem here. See the System log for any error message. Also be aware that port 443 is being required by AiCloud, so if you try to forward port 443 to a server, it won't work.

I dunno if it's just me, but I had pretty weird issue after upgrading to this FW. One of my laptops, 13-inch MacBook Pro (2010 year model running OS X 10.8), started to "lose" the connection to the router every few minutes WITHOUT actually "dropping" the WiFi signal... For example, I would be browsing the internet or watching some streaming movie, and then the connection would stop without any indication from OS itself. No internet connection and no connection to the router itself (even though the "signal strength" indicator in OSX still showed proper signal with proper strength), unless I manually "turn off" then "turn on" the built-in WiFi adapter. I've looked at the "System Log" in the router, but there was nothing "abnormal". I've checked the DHCP leases, but everything was also fine there (the laptop always had a unique IP address assigned to it by the router). I've done several "full resets" of the router (which was pretty annoying due to loss of all settings) using the "reset" button as well as the NVRAM reset command posted here, I've tried to assign a static IP to the laptop, etc. but nothing really helped. Then I simply re-flashed the router with previous version of firmware (official version of 3.0.0.3.178), re-entered all the necessary WiFi settings and my laptop had a perfectly stable connection again  Never had any issues like these with other routers/access points and this laptop...

Thanks RMerlins, didn't change anything and tried enabling it again, worked perfect without any problems...

The only thing that I think could be improved is the dynamic dns used for AiCloud, as I use DNS-O-Matic to update several dyndns providers and then AiCloud tries to use all.dnsomatic.com as the address to connect, does anyone have a workaround for this?

Hello Merlin (and fellow experts),

The general thread for this router RT-N66U was locked so I thought to post it here. Have this router set up and all the LAN / Wireless networking is working swimmingly with FW 3.0.0.4.220. I do have a couple questions:

(a) USB Printer Support: Have my Canon printer set up on the USB of the router so my wife can print from her laptop without having to turn on my computer. In fact, this is the main reason I got this router. Installed the ASUS printer setup and printed a test page and everything is great at first. But like clockwork, the next day the first page of every print job just hangs about 20% of the way through and locks the printer and the Windows print spooler service. Reboot the printer and it works. I assigned a static IP address to both computer and laptop (I read this would help) but I still get this problem. Tried reinstalling the printer via the windows LPR method FAQ linked to from the ASUS router GUI to the same result. What am I doing wrong here? My spidey sense is telling me that the router is getting "overloaded" by the print request. Is there anything I can do to fix this? The printer works fine when shared through my computer, but I'd rather use the router as it was the main reason for buying it and I don't like leaving my computer on 24/7. Do you (Merlin) use the router usb print server? Does anybody here have the problem I describe? Please and thank you.

(b) External Hard Drive
Just received a brand spanking new 2TB Samsung Green F4 hard drive to run off the rt-n66u. Need a few quick pointers on how to best pair this with the RT-n66u: Can some of you please answer these quick questions below:

- Should I format this to .ext2 for best results?
- Does the official latest ASUS firmware support the "green" drive spin down that Merlin's firmware include? Should I go back to the Merlin firmware for this reason?
- Is the SAMBA interface still corrupting data on attached hard drives? Should I stick with the Merlin firmware or the official ASUS?

I tried to best answer my own question, but I could not find satisfactory answers to the above questions on my own.

Thanks,
Mark

If you don't need to plug the USB disk to a Windows machine, then I recommend going with ext3. It will provide better performance, better reliability, and will allow you to install and use Optware should you ever decide to.

The HDD spindown daemon isn't part of the Asus firmware, however since it's a green HD it's possible that it has its own internal power management that would spin it down after a few mins. That's at least the case with the WD Green line of HDDs. So give it a shot, you'll see if it turns off on its own or not.

I've never worked with .ext3 before, and I was told to use Paragon partition manager to format to ext3 in the first place. Is there a windows based application that can do the same thing? I heard gparted works too. Or is it better to boot into Paragon and do it that way?

From my limited understanding of the router at this point, the SAMBA interface does all the Windows 7 < -> router <-> .ext3 HDD communicating, right? Installing ext2 Volume manager on my PC would be redundant?

Thanks Merlin. I appreciate all your work, so I tried my best to answer my own question before I posted.

Boring Aside:

My primary goal of this whole HDD to router connection is to have a standalone itunes server for my home theater. My AVR is Airplay connected and my Android tablet has an outstanding remote for itunes app on it that allows me to control and stream my music to my home theater via the tablet app with very snappy and precise controls (mindblowingly cool let me tell you). All the DLNA apps out there are frustratingly slow, and are junk by comparison. I yield to no one in my contempt for Apple, but itunes via Airplay is a kick butt product for quickly managing huge libraries of music and videos remotely, and streaming them anywhere in a multi-room listening environment.

The problem is, I need a computer running itunes, iphone, ipad or a laptop, itself to do this. The itunes server from Asus RT-n66u, from my understanding, does not run itunes, it just manages the files for an itunes application running elsewhere (on a computer, laptop, iphone, etc.)

The reason I am bringing this up (and probably boring you) Merlin, is because there is a HUGE market for this kind of thing in the home theater world. If some genius could write the optware code so that, say this router or a beefier next gen one, could run standalone itunes itself on a networked hard drive without needing a PC / laptop / mac product on and running itunes, any owner of an Airplay AVR / home theater would be champing at the bit to buy it. Here is the app I have on my Nexus 7 that is a miracle of science.

The only missing link is the standalone itunes server for a router. Any owner of an advanced Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, Pioneer, Yamaha AVR with aiplay who has an android phone would gladly pay for "Optware" that could do this.

The only reason I say this is because you are obviously in regular contact with the "powers-that-be-shot-callers" inside Asustek. Adding a feature like this to a future router would open a huge market within the home theater crowds who would gladly pay a slight premium, say $50, on a router rather than having to buy a Mac product. Hell, I know I would.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Whatever file system format you use for the hard drive is transparent over the network, it's just recommended to use a native Linux file system.

ext2 volume manager would be to access files on the drive plugged into your Windows box if you need that.

Apple likes to use proprietary stuff. Everything would be so much simpler if they just used open standards instead of re-inventing the wheel, and then either keeping the standard closing, or charging an arm and a leg for a license.

That's one of the numerous reasons why I refuse to buy any Apple product. Because I want it to work with anything non-Apple that I might own.

So no, iTunes running on anything but a PC/Mac will never happen. mt-daapd is an attempt at reproducing their protocol, and it's only partly successful - it won't work properly with newer devices. Its author gave up on it years ago.

I'm not really familiar with Airplay but your description is similar do DLNA and most devices (including this router) already support this.
What does Airplay enable that DLNA does not support?
