New Around Here
Hello all,

Apologies as I know this has been mentioned before.

I've read many posts and seen contradicting information.

I'm running the latest Merlin FW (3.0.0.4.354.29 Beta 1) and through the GUI have set a firewall rule to allow UDP 9 to broadcast on the LAN but it doesn't seem to work even though the GUI allowed it.

I assume adding the firewall rule also sets the required NAT policies? I'm used to SonicWall devices but my home ISP (Sky) require a specific DHCP command which SonicWall do not support.

However, I purchased the RT-N66U router and installed the Merlin FW (btw, enormous thanks to RMerlin!).

If it is possible, would someone mind detailing the steps required to allow a broadcast rule to be set?

The rule is to allow WOL from WAN to LAN through UDP 9. My internal PC has a reserved DHCP entry which I assume adds a static ARP?

If I cannot do this through the GUI, is it possible via the console?

Thanks v.much in advance :)

just to clarify the setup?

SKY(ADSL)-->AsusRouter-->SonicWall--->Clients

First of all I would check you can see the client from the ASUS (go to 'network tools' , 'wake on lan' tab - and try waking it directly from there).

Another easy test would be to enable AI cloud 'smart access' as you can send WOL packets from the app / GUI in there, but I may have misunderstood your network layout.

Response

Hello Pericynthion,

Apologies in my delay replying. I did not receive an email notification.

Yes, the layout you describe is correct.

Do you know if the Asus OEM or Merlin F/W supports broadcast rules? If so, is there a specific way to set it up as using the GUI does not seem to work.

Many thanks for your help.

Note: I have AICloud working with WOL and I even have a VPN setup which allows WOL to work without using AICloud. I do, however, still want the ability to use a broadcast rule without resorting to aicloud or vpn. I realise the risks too and am happy with these.

Thanks
