Can anyone access drives attached to their N66U while connected via OPENVPN?

I have OPENVPN running on my N66U. When away from home, I can contact everything on the LAN while connected to the N66U OPENVPN server but the drive that is connected to the N66U itself.

I have one USB drive connected to the N66U, and contact it while at home by using either the N66U name or the ip address of the router.

\\name-of-router
\\ip-of-router

Does anyone else have this issue, or is it just me? I am thinking there is a simple fix I am not thinking of! :D

TLDR: Windows XP as a client computer was the issue, Win7 works fine.

What device are you using to try and connect to it on the WAN side? Any reason why you don't use PPTP?

PPTP is deprecated, and should be considered as insecure since its encryption has been broken over a year ago.

Further explanation of my connection from the WAN side-

I usually connect from the WAN side by- a Win XP/Win 7 computer connected to a hotel/household router for internet access. Occasionally I connect with a Win XP/ Win 7 computer connected to a phone hotspot for internet, but this is rare.

I can also confirm that I can connect to the USB drive connected to the N66U (using the ip address) when I use the N66U's PPTP vpn. Of course, as rmerlin noted this is potentially insecure and therefore an undesirable solution.

Could it be possible I am not connecting long enough when I test for connectivity to the N66U-attached-drive? I have been connecting by OPENVPN and then looking for the \\ip-of-router share within a minute or so...

what device are you trying to connect to your network on? I can access mine from my phone no problem. I would say trying using the syntax ftp://192.168.1.1 or smb://192.168.1.1 and see if that works.

Usually a laptop running either XP or Win7. Actually, maybe it's XP that is the problem, I will try with Win7. Thanks for the syntax suggestions, I tried them but no dice. I will report back if I can get it working with Win7.

Looks like XP is indeed the issue. I have no problem connecting to drives attached to the N66U when I connect to the N66U OPENVPN server from a Win7 client! :D
