Apparently not out of the woods yet. Grsync gives me errors....

Code:
rsync: [sender] write error: Broken pipe (32)
ERROR: out of memory in flist_expand [generator]
rsync error: error allocating core memory buffers (code 22) at util2.c(106) [generator=3.1.2]
Rsync process exit status: 22

Haven't figured it out why yet.

Remember, this a router with a paltry 256M memory :(

First thing to try, is to set up a swap file.

Before I got around to figuring out and setting up a swap file, I needed to shut down the router to replace surge protector (to add another outlet for the hard drive). But when when the router booted back up, entware / rsync / ssh did not work any longer. I am sure there is a way to make it survive past a reboot, but at this point I am just going to go back to backing up by directly connecting the USB drive to the computers.

I had wanted to attach it to the router to make it "easier", more automated and save me the minor time and hassle of connecting to each computer individually. Initially I thought I could just plug in the hard drive and go. But at this point with what I am trying to do it is getting more complicated than needed.

But I did want to thank those who helped me out on this thread (john9527 and ColinTaylor) as well as those who keep up the merlin wiki. I did learn a lot and may come back to it again if / when I get more time to do so.

Thanks again!
