Can not move/delete/paste USB files RT-AC68U

SkidsinFrance

New Around Here
Hi, I have a RT-AC68U wth a 3tb usb drive loaded with media files. All has been working fine, But suddenly I can not move/delete or add more files from either of my Win 10 PC's.Nothing has changed on the router or either of the PC's and am at a loss! Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Is this the same problem you reported in October last year?

Hi, Yes, Last time I ended up buying another RT-AC68U and starting from scratch with another hard drive. Now exactly same things hapening again. Samba has read write permissions but no joy!

Seems rather extreme, buying an entirely new router to try and fix a USB problem.

What firmware version are you running on the router?

Can you post screen shots of your Samba settings and the error messages you're getting when trying to add/move/delete files.

In addition to the previous suggestions others have made, what is the exact error message you are getting from Windows 10?
What firmware are you running on the RT-AC68U?
Was the RT-AC68U a jail broken TM-AC1900 router?
What is the USB device attached to the router (it's make and model)?
What other features are enabled on the router?
If using Asus-Merlin firmware, are you using any add-on scripts? If so what are they?

Standard troubleshooting if you haven't done it already:
Reboot the router.
Eject the USB drive, reboot the router, then after router finishes rebooting reconnect USB device to the router.
Check the Samba settings under the USB Applications > Server Center > USB Application - Network Place (Samba) Share / Cloud Disk section and ensure the USB drive's folder that is being shared has the proper permissions set for it (R/W) for the user connected to that Share.
Eject the USB device and connect it to a computer and check the device for errors. USB flash drives are notorious for exhibiting reading/writing issues, or simply going into lock mode, right before they die.

Hi Colin, I do not get any errors just 🚫 when trying to transfer files from the two windows 10 pc,s. I can play existing files but not modify the folders in any way. All was working fine. I could understand if 1 windows machine had a glitch, but not 2 at the same time. The only thing that has changed is a new folder has appeared in USB application, ( ntfaek.00000000) Which I did not create and can not remove. The firmware is merlin 386.14.

Sorry, your screenshot is barely readable. Can you post a clearer picture please (use the PC's Print Screen button).

I do not recognise a situation where that symbol appears. What software/function are you using that displays that symbol. Again, a screenshot would help.

Are you sure the file name isn't ntfsck.00000000? That would be a recovered file from Windows chkdsk.

Windows 10 started to develop problems for me and I ran
Code:
sfc /scannow
multiple times. (over several months)

Example: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...em-files-79aa86cb-ca52-166a-92a3-966e85d4094e

I did not want to wipe and reset so I updated my PC using a Rufus formatted USB drive with Windows 11 24H2 ISO file. My problems went away. https://rufus.ie/en/

If corruption keeps happening you may want to explore that your problems could be initiated from the PC side of things.

Also, if you can afford a better router the AC68U is not the best choice today and you should try to move to an AX class router.

Some additional DISM commands:
Powershell v7.5: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/p...ing-powershell-on-windows?view=powershell-7.5

Code:
sfc /scannow

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

shutdown /r /t 0

exit

I like to take a few steps back, below is the working procedure to get a USB drive on the RT-AC68U, please double check you performed all steps:
  1. Plug the USB storage device in the router.
  2. On the Network Map page, open the USB storage device and Format it.
  3. USB Application > Servers Center > Network Place (Samba) Share / Cloud Disk
    • Enable Share : ON
    • Allow guest login: OFF
    • Note or set the Device Name
    • The Work Group name shall be identical to that of your computers (Windows 10 or 11 default is WORKGROUP).
    • The Router Account is there (which you cannot remove).
    • You can make a new account (you better do to avoid the need to disclose the Router Account to others).
    • Make a new Folder and set applicable access rights for every account to the Folder.
  4. From Windows you can access the USB storage device as: \\[Device Name]\
    • Recently I found that specially on Windows 11 the USB device was troublesome to access by its Device Name, better use the Router IP address e.g. \\192.168.1.1\
  5. New Sub-folders you can make in Windows File Explorer.
  6. You can also make a mapped network drive.
