"Cannot Login Unless Logout Another User First"

here's another issue, i have been trying out the usb smb function and it works fine but speeds are nowhere near where they should be, it seems capped at 30mbps up/down and the usb drive i know is capable of over 100mbps sequential reads, any time i move files i see both cpu's spiking to 80-90% usage while transferring the files, ive tried formatting it with all 3 of the available filesystems on the router NTFS-FAT-HFS hoping they reduce overhead or something and so far they all perform the same, seemingly capped at 30mbps

any ideas about that?

You're not going to hit 100 MB/s on older router models, the CPU and the USB controller are not fast enough to handle that.

how do i turn this amazing security feature off?
This is driving me bonkers on a flaky VPN connection. Connection drops and I reconnect and then can't log in to the GUI anymore.

Except his request is different to yours. He doesn't want to log in from multiple devices at the same time, he wants the GUI session to log out when his VPN disconnects. Thereby allowing him to reconnect straight away from the same device.

@sbsnb You could SSH into the router and restart httpd. That would free up the session immediately.
Code:
service restart_httpd
Other than that you could set a shorter Auto Logout period. The minimum value allowed from the GUI is 10 minutes. You could set this manually to something smaller via NVRAM, although that might be quite annoying in day to day use if it's very small.

You seemed kind of pissed off that people tried to help you with your problem. They did explain that the GUI was (perhaps poorly) designed around single user access so that tracking and applying changes could be easier to manage. Merlin even stated that he tried to minimize the impact changes make to the running services. Ultimately though, this is an issue you should addressed with asus if it is still a problem for you. So, a lot more helpful than you seem to imply with your reply.

In general, I undrstand why Asus took such a simplistic approach. Perhaps a bit behind the times for today's tech, but in general, still works. There are of course times where it really would be nice to disable the "feature", but those usecases don't seem to have justified (yet) a complete firmware GUI redesign.

I agree. Multi-user is problematic when multiple users start changing things at the same time. "KISS" (keep it simple ...)

Home routers are already complicated enough acting as a router & wireless access point combo, Ethernet switch, DNS (name) server, DHCP server, NAT gateway, print server, file server and more. Lions, tigers and bears, oh my.

im not asking for multiuser to be implemented

there's no issue here, you can login from 20 devices and make overlapping changes on all of them, they all overwrite each other at any overlapping changes, ive seen countless devices do that, this is just a pointless limitation using the wrong justification

if there's anything to add it would be a warning to tell the user that the change he just made will need a reboot instead of just having to guess which "apply" button takes 2 seconds vs 2 minutes rebooting, something even the crappiest ISP routers have done since T1 was a thing
