Cant connect on L2TP

Hi there.. .first post so go easy on me. I have an RT-AC68U with merlin 380.61 on it.
I recently stopped being able to connect to any of my VPN providers servers using openVPN, which i suspect some blocking going on from my ISP. i can connect using PPTP but when i switch the protocol to L2TP i get PAP authentication failed

Sep 2 04:04:36 pppd[1268]: Plugin pppol2tp.so loaded.
Sep 2 04:04:36 pppd[1268]: pppd 2.4.7 started by admin, uid 0
Sep 2 04:04:36 pppd[1268]: Using interface ppp0
Sep 2 04:04:36 pppd[1268]: Connect: ppp0 <--> l2tp (198.148.94.143)
Sep 2 04:04:38 pppd[1268]: PAP authentication failed
Sep 2 04:04:38 pppd[1268]: Terminating on signal 15
Sep 2 04:04:44 pppd[1268]: Connection terminated.
Sep 2 04:04:44 pppd[1268]: Modem hangup
Sep 2 04:04:44 pppd[1268]: Exit.

Im double NATed behind a router i have no access to..... are there any setting i can apply to get this to work?.... i believe PPTP is not particularly secure.

Thanks

I had the same issue although my router is on 380.58.
It looks like that L2TP is not fully implemented in firmware because there is no option to upload a certificate or set a pre-shared-key.

I managed to get it working in the end by running a L2TP client in the VPN section rather than setting L2TP as a WAN connection type in the WAN section (ExpressVPN howto setup) . Not sure what the difference is there.

You are correct, without possibility to specify the Pre-Shared-Key from my VPN provider, I am unable to connect with the L2TP protocol (on 380.61 here).
