New Around Here
I have RT-AC68U and I've tried to get QoS to work both in stock firmware and Merlin with no luck,

I've had QoS setup and working correctly on my old router using DD-WRT so I think I understand the concept and how it's supposed to work,

I've also read as many guides as I could on AC68U and other asus routers but most of them seems to be outdated(?), for example the screen shots posted http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15279 are different than mine, I don't have "User specify rule list" on my main page.

couple of questions,

I set both my Download/Upload limit to 1mb/s to see if this thing works at all and I was still downloading at 25mb/s. I don't see how QoS could work if it's not limiting my download to the rate I set on the first page.

another question, in User defined rules, do I have to specify all the rules for QoS to work? Are "Destination Port" and "Transferred" field required for the rule to work?

I assume "Enable Smart QoS", is the main toggle for QoS, since when I turn it off it hides the "Upload/Download Bandwidth". What throws me off a bit is "Smart", is that just asuse's flavor/marketing term for QoS?

Hi a lot of good questions. I'm new to QoS too so looking forward to the answers.

Quick question, you say that you could still download at 25Mb when you set QoS to 1Mb. I think they will still allow 1 device to get full bandwidth if no other devices are actively sending packets.

So maybe, test it again, with a download on one device and streaming(YouTube/Netflix) and VoIP on other devices? That might give a bit more clues to how well the QoS is working.

so I set one device (server) to lowest priority and my laptop (mbp) highest priority.

I started a download on Server (low priority) and it started transferring at 25 mbps.

at the same time I started a speed test on my laptop. I would expect the transfer on the server to drop to close to 0 (like it would before with dd-wrt) and speed on my laptop to reach 25mbps. but instead the transfer on the server pretty much stayed the same and my laptop got as high as 2 mbps.

as far as I can tell QoS doesn't really do anything.

Hi, did you find a solution ?
I'm on Merlin 378.50 and I'm having the exact same problem, nothing seems to work. So I tried to set my down/up limit to 0.1 and it still downloads at full speed ...

Maybe some other option is creating a conflict with qos ?

Anyone could help ?

Thanks

I came here after discovering the exact same thing, i have 374.43_2 firmware, hope somebody can help, the official documentation is lacking in details so i am not even sure that skipping some of the parameters is ok.

ASUS Traditional QoS needs to add IMQ (Intermediate Queueing Device) for downloading sharping.
You can read http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.imq.html
It needs to add some patches into kernel level, CTF NAT maybe is broken after adding these functions.
Suggest to use new Adaptive QoS in RT-AC68U fw 378-4850.
http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC68U/HelpDesk_Download/

If I remember correctly, IMQ modifies the skb structure. That means the wireless driver has to be recompiled to match the new skb structure (same with anything else that relies on skb, so probably ctf/emf/igs too)

MIPS (2.6.22.19) already has the IMQ patch applied since it took its kernel from Tomato/oleg, but not the ARM (2.6.36) kernel, which came from Broadcom.

So, can we consider QoS to be broken and in need of some TLC or are most of us overestimating the capabilities of QoS in these older kernels?

In my opinion, without rate limiting, QoS is wholly useless if latency is the primary concern. Traffic-policing is deprecated.

I have seen a thread or two that fixed the AsusWRT traffic-shaping scripts to have the QoS function more like most of us have come to expect. I will try to find the threads...

Hmm so it should be working on latest Merlin release? i am planning to update to 378.52_2, does regular QoS will still not work? will try with adaptive QoS in that case.

Thanks.
