I've been looking into a managed gigabit switch for home, and the Cisco SG300-10 line looks like a great deal, especially used. Layer 3, PoE (if you buy the correct model), good for playing around on even if not a true iOS switch (so Cisco doesn't ask for a maintenance contract to get the firmware). But one thing I couldn't figure out.

Cisco has five models (10, 10P, 10MP, 10PP, 10MPP). I get that the P stands for PoE, and that PP/MPP are PoE+ allowing more power. However, I don't get what the M stands for, only that these cost more. The comparison charts from Cisco don't seem to reveal anything about what the M stands for. I've done some searching, and haven't really found anything that makes it clear.

Any ideas?

It has to do with both total watts and if it is POE plus. Example:
SG-300-10P = 62watts
SG-300-10PP = 62watts (POE+ Supported)
SG-300-10MP = 124watts
SG-300-10MPP = 124watts (POE+ Supported)

Okay, there's the part I missed. Apparently the "M" stands for "max power" from the additional reading I was able to find.

Just got a killer deal on a slightly used SG-30010MPP, for less than half the going price of new. The 10PP would have been fine as well, but even used it would have cost me pretty much the same as this 10MPP. I'm stoked to do a little playing around with it and the Watchguard XTM-25W I'll be adding to the network.

That's cool. I really like the Cisco small business series, especially the 300 and 500 series. They are a very good value for the money, much more so when you find a great deal on them!
