My internet connection went down at about 2:50 AM and was restored by using a soft reboot from the router interface. Now I am not fluent in router code but it did seem to take longer than normal and the log showed a level of activity I have not seen before for a reboot. I am running stock firmware 3.0.0.4.378_4585 I have posted the reboot text link below, does anyone see anything unusual?

One concern of course would be if an external influence caused the situation. I see what looks like a debug routine initiated. I also see the phrase "internal error", "kernel panic", and "partition creation" in the flash.

I am also now being prompted to load a firmware update and have the flashing icon on the top of the interface. I checked the support page and it looks like updates are available but I have not seen any threads on this lately. I usually like to wait to see how the more seasoned users feel about the update. I could swear all these updates except the November one had been taken down last time I looked.

Looking into your syslog.log extract, I could not find anything unusual: You WAN went down serveral time (I count: 3) and came back, witch triggered some router activity.

As you can see in the ASUSWRT official forum section, you are far behind from the actual firmware...

Between the version 378.4585, which you use currently and the latest one 378.9313, Asus released at already 4 more versions in between...
The firmware update checking on the router does not really work well (I would say: not at all!), so you better check the forum or the Asus homepage regularly!

By the way: Do not forget to do a factory reset and re-configure the router manually - always needed when you jump over many firmware releases!
On top you should remove/forget the WLAN client profiles and also reconnect to the router to re-sync with the latest hidden settings oft wireless settings.

And: If you want do yourself a favor, you should install Merlin's enhanced version of the Asus firmware (fully compatible and developed in cooperation with Asus).

Hmmmm, check this first...
4585 seems to be a very stable one .....

Thanks Joegreat, I updated to the latest version of the stock firmware. I had been monitoring the releases along with this forum but after they all came out at Beta level they seemed to completely disappear with the only option 4585. Obviously that not the case now.

I have found my Galaxy S4 now wants to lose WiFi connection on both the 2.5 and 5 GHz bands here at the house, (nothing else does). The signal strength is listed very strong but a message says "ready to connect when network quality improves". I am sitting right next to the router as I write this. A few days ago I rebooted the router and that seemed to fix it for a few days. This did not happen with 4585

You can try to disable "beamforming" under Wireless / Professional (for both bands). It's incompatible with most SmartPhones...

The S4 supports beamforming and has not been a problem for the last year until this latest update to the router firmware. I found others saying I needed to turnoff the Smart network switch on the phone. I am giving this a try and so far it is working, but this also has not been a problem before the router update. One thing I noticed yesterday when I told the phone to forget the connection and then reset it was a message that my wifi connection may not offer internet access. It did however.

While I have the AC56U I am also running 4585 and it's been very stable for months. What I'm trying to figure out is whether going through the update process to 9313 is worthwhile since I'm not a power user and only have 2 wireless devices due to a powerline network in my condo. I haven't noticed any hacking, malicious stuff or any hiccups at all with 4585 either.

Security updates are not to fix already happened attacks but to prevent them!
