Configuring ASUS RT-AC68U to work with Google Cloud Printing?

Anybody here using Google Cloud Printing on their home network with an ASUS router?

I recently bought a Chromebook for the kids and am having some challenges trying to set up printing to work via Google Cloud Printing (GCP) on my Brother printers, which supposedly are Google Cloud Print ready with my ASUS RT-AC68U router. The printers prints fine from Windows based clients on the WLAN.

From what I've read, it seems to get GCP to work, my GCP ready Brother printers needed to have:

1. Configured with static IP on my network (192.168.1.5 and 192.168.1.6) - DONE

2. Primary DNS set to 8.8.8.8 - DONE

3. Registered on Google Cloud Printing on the printer - DONE, which I did from a Windows based client. (see below):

4. Ports 80, 443, and 5222 opened (?).

#4 is where I'm confused - do I need all three ports opened or just 5222? Some links mentioned that it's just 5222 while others say all three are needed. What i am unsure or uncertain is where do I configure it on my ASUS RT-AC68U screen (FW is 3.0.0.4.380.4164)? Also, does the registration of the printer have to be done from the Google account that's associated on the Chromebook or any Google account?

Do I open the ports that it needs under:

1. Firewall/Network Services Filter screen - http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_Firewall_Content.asp
2. WAN/Port Trigger screen - http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_PortTrigger_Content.asp
3. Virtual Server/Port Forwarding screen - http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_VirtualServer_Content.asp

do you have a logical flow of how the traffic is going?

does this stuff support UPNP and port triggerin?

GCP printers should not need any router configuration. No ports, static IP, firewall, etc., unless you're normally blocking outgoing ports. Almost surely the printer makes an outgoing connection to the GCP server. This line is from my router's "System Log - Active Connections" screen:

tcp 192.168.1.xxx:41351 173.194.202.125:5222 ESTABLISHED​

The only thing you should need to do is (1) register the printers on Google Cloud Printing, (2) grant the Google users GCP access to these printers, (3) configure the Chromebook users to use the printers.

Since printing works from your Windows computer, that narrows things down to (2) and (3).

Thanks for the info about not needing to open any ports on the RT-AC68U to get GCP to work. I assuming that if I want to access the printer outside of my home network (e.g. at Starbucks, etc.), I would then need to open up a port, specifically 5222?

What I am running into now is strange error on my Brother 3170CDW color printer which I suspect is related to GCP; when I configured the printer for GCP, I noticed the printer would show me an error message on the display, "Print Unable E1" and everthing would be frozen. The only way out was to power cycle the printer and then a few minutes later, the same error message would come back sometimes. I cleared the config on the printers and re-configured my WLAN on the printer except for the GCP part, and the printer is back to normal again. Not sure what's going on with it having issues with GCP but I suspect I may have to call Brother support about it.

Basically I searched for "Google cloud printing brother" on the internet and came up across several links that mentions ports that needs to open. Here's one such guide/post: http://www.everyoneprint.com/support/kb/452368/

No, you don't need to anything special to print from outside your home network. The printer and the computer just need to both be able to make an outbound connection to Google.

Here's my understanding. To use Google Cloud Print, you need:

• Either a GCP-ready printer or a computer running the GCP print service to go between the printer and the internet. If you use a computer, obviously that computer needs to be turned on and running the GCP print service software.
• Whichever one you use, it needs to be able to open an outbound connection to a Google server on port 5222. Unless you specifically blocked that port at your router, it should already be open. If your printer setup worked at all, then it's good to go.
• Grant specific users access to this cloud printer. (When friends visit, you can grant them access so they can print their return boarding passes.)
  
• Computers and mobile devices can print from anywhere as long as (1) they're logged in with a Google account granted access to this could printer, and (2) they can get an outbound connection to Google.

"Print Unable E1" is unrelated. A Google search finds pages like this one from brother-usa.com which says "To resolve this issue a firmware update is needed."
