Connection Dropped - AC86U Rebooting

Hi,

I keep getting dropped connection on my Asus AC86U running 386_2 and now 386_3. Attahced is some logs if it helps, even the WAN cuts out as well as WiFi networks (both 2.4 and 5.0). Not sure what logs I need to post, but this was the last lot when it last went: https://pastebin.com/uhpZALE3

Unfortunately there's nothing useful in that log file as it doesn't cover the time period that the problem occurred. It appears to only show a 10 minute period after the router had rebooted.

If the "dropped connection" happened at 13:00 in your log file that's because your router crashed and rebooted itself. The reason for the crash is unclear other than there was a memory corruption that caused a kernel panic.

Your log file is full of pktrunner ucast errors which might be related to the problem. I suggest that you start by removing your add-on scripts (Diversion, ntpMerlin and anything else) and seeing if that stops the error messages.

Sounds similar. I have just initialized the router and setup as new. I only have Ethernet connections on, and so far after 1 hour, I have 0 errors or warnings on the log. As soon as I add a wireless device, it spits the dummy out and throws errors. Unfortunately haven't had enough time to test the connection drops yet but will update. I will also check the DNS theory, I was using Cloudfare 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2 IIRC....

Thanks, just followed your nuke and M&M guide. So far it's fine with no Wi-Fi connections and has been for 2 hours, logs are barely reporting anything vs every few seconds before. Will leave it as it for a day before adding any WiFi devices

UPDATE: Left the router in the M&M state. Been perfect for 3 days, not a single issue, with Wi-Fi connections too. Will reformat the USB in a PC and add AMTM, then leave it for another 3 days and see how it goes. Will report back.

It gave way again. I nuked the router again, setup M&M and within 15 minutes, 6 Apple devices and Ring started throwing the errors up, WAN and LAN light went off, the internet light went red before all going white again after 2 minutes or so.

Not sure if these are the cause of the router rebooting itself, but I may just throw it in the bin and buy an AX86U....

There is no crash information in that log file. It just shows the normal boot up information (and the pktrunner entries).

I spoke to Asus who said it sounded like a hardware defect and I should go to the retailer I got it off, which was......Amazon. I went on the live chat and within 4 minutes was offered a full refund or replacement item, I went for the full refund option and I ordered a new AX-86U instead (turn out supply is low and I couldn't wait, so I cancelled and re ordered an AC86U again). Perfect service.

Sadly can't provide any details on what is/was wrong with the router but given it does it on factory settings after a full reset makes me think it is 100% hardware related.

UPDATE: New router, manufactured in 2021. Did numerous NVRAM reset, M&M Config, reformatted the USB, updated to 386.3_2 and was fine for around 10-11 days without issue then it started dropping out/reooting, the router is just over a week old, running the following scripts:

- Diversion
- Skynet
- Scribe
- ScMerlin
- UiDivstats
- UiScribe

Reset NVRAM, reset and Initialised settings and setup the M&M config and formatted the JFFS, left the USB out entirely, and had a crash within 20 minutes, really scratching my head with this as its literally factory settings and a router that is less than 2 weeks old

Finally, to put this to bed. This has finally been traced to a client device/cable. I have a few Ethernet Switches across the house, the one in the bedroom connects to a Marantz MCR-611 with Cat6 cable. This is causing the following errors constantly:

I have diagnosed this by isolating the device, plugging that Ethernet in and out along with rebooting the router, giving the router 1 hour to settle between unplug and plug ins and restarts. The error is thrown almost immediately when it is plugged in, and stops around 5 minutes after it is unplugged. Not sure if this is a fault on the device/setup or a wiring fault, will do more investigating on that but happy to pinpoint it to a certain cable/device.

Not sure if this is the cause of the router rebooting but it went all night last night stable which it could never do so I assume this should fix it. So for anyone who gets this error in future, isolate your Ethernet devices one by one to find the cause.

EDIT: The Marantz MCR-611 seems to be at fault, not sure what has changed, it only seems to be the past 3 to 4 months or so where this error has come from. AirPlay really struggles to work and I also get this message when trying to Airplay to said receiver:
