New Around Here
Hi there. My old router is an 68u and ive now picked up a rt-ac1900. Can i save my settings from my 68u and simply restore the new router to them?
Thanks

you can try, they previously should have same firmware installed, but if any trouble dont ask and make a factory from scratch.

No. The settings file contains low-level hardware specific information, like MAC addresses, that are unique to each router.

I have done it in the past from a 68U to a 68W and had no problem, could be luck or whatever.

There is the option to transfer Asus-DDNS into config-save file!!!
Would make absolutely no sense if you cannot transfer it to another router ... ?!?!?
And they call it TRANSFER, not safe or something like that.

I remember someone recently reporting that they had imported their settings from their previous router. Because they also used the old router as an access point they found their network didn't work properly because of the duplicated MAC addresses.

The answer has never been correct lmao.

Most of the guidance on Asus WRT setting transfer has never been correct on this forum, from the usual 3 or 4 people.

You can transfer between AC and AC and AX and AC to AX just fine within the same hardware vendor (ACxxU to 87U won't import professional wifi settings for obvious reasons)

I've done some recent testing, you can see the results here:

As per Asus own FAQ though - best effort only and if it doesn't work factory reset is needed. Most people prefer to start fresh so there is no gambling what's going on under the hood. Also note stock Asuswrt only. With Asuswrt-Merlin things get more complicated.

Guidance? If factory reset is not a big problem - do it. If not - test your luck, may work. There was a success report XT8 to XT12 recently.

And here was my response

And I agree to it - most home setups are simple and starting fresh is the better option. The above was testing the theory and eventual evolution of save/restore. I would say it works for convenience, but impossible to test all combinations and eventual upgrades skipping entire generations of hardware. Convenience options are just that - convenience. Usually not the best. Running into issues will require factory reset anyway.
