I notice every time my ISP modem reboots for any reason, the DDNS on my Asus router becomes "inactive".

Even if I click on Apply again at the bottom of the screen, it won't connect. I've tried disabling and re-enabling the service, still does not connect.

But, if I enter a new Host Name and register it, then it becomes active.

At that point I can enter my regular Host Name and hit Apply, and it stays active.

Is this a normal behavior, or do I need to make a change on a setting for the service to reconnect after the Internet is back?

Thank you.

I have been looking and found Dynu which provides free ddns server. I set up an account with them and was able to get "Registration Successful" on the router after entering my login from Dynu.
But, I realized I used Dyndns.org as I thought it was Dynu.

My question is, if Dynu and Dyndns are not the same company, how come I was able to use the same credentials and get a successful registration?
I also used the same credentials with namecheap.com and also got a "Registration Successful".

Is this normal?
How come I am able to use the same credentials for dynu, dyndns and namecheap?

I use afraid.org in the drop-down, works great

I've read that you have to check-in every 6 months or so if not the account deactivates. Knowing me, I may forget to do that. Looking for something I can just setup and forget about it like the one from Asus. The issue is I now have an ISP modem that does not have bridge mode option, so I am behind NAT and now every time the modem reboots, the DDNS service will not reconnect automatically and becomes inactive.

When I had the bridge mode option, this wasn't an issue. I'm thinking that maybe it will be the same with any DDNS server I use due to the double nat issue.
Is there a way to make the DDNS server reconnect automatically when behind NAT?

I posted the steps for you in another thread. I have not had a need for it in a while but I just set it up again to test and my dynu domain works.

That's where I went, but I don't see your instructions there. The last post I see is mine asking you how you did this.

It has been a while since I was using it.
To use Dynu.net through DNSomatic, you need to set up a DNSomatic "Dynamic DNS" record pointing to your Dynu domain name; essentially, you'll configure DNSomatic to update your Dynu hostname with your current IP address whenever it changes, allowing you to access your network using the Dynu domain even with a dynamic IP address.
Here's how to do it:
  • Create a Dynu account: If you don't have one already, sign up for a Dynu account and create a desired hostname (e.g., "myhome.dynu.com").
  • Access DNSomatic: Log in to your DNSomatic control panel.
  • Add a new DNS record: Navigate to the section for managing DNS records and choose the "Dynamic DNS" record type.
  • Configure details: [
    • Hostname: Enter the Dynu domain name you created (e.g., "myhome.dynu.com").
    • Provider: Select "Dynu" from the list of available providers.
    • Username and Password: Input your Dynu login credentials.
  • Update interval: Set how often DNSomatic should check for IP changes and update the Dynu record (usually a few minutes).
  • Activate the record: Save your settings and enable the newly created Dynamic DNS record.
Important points to remember:
  • Router configuration: You might need to configure your router to use the Dynu hostname and update its IP address automatically through the Dynu service, depending on your router model.
  • Testing: After setting up the DNSomatic record, test if it's working by accessing your network using the Dynu domain name from another device on the internet.
