Hi all,

I wanted to add Deep packet inspection to my network.

Is there a simple addon I can use in amtm to accomplish this?

I basically want to monitor what my kids are watching on YouTube and how long they are using the computer for specific apps, I tried netnanny but doesn't show per app.

Thanks in advance.

Given that DPI's depth of inspection, I'd expect the horsepower required to run it to be significant and beyond what a consumer router can do.

But will be watching this post to see what folks come up with :)

Not as far as i am aware, DPI would decrease throughput and require a much better cpu than we have in these asus routers, interestingly though UniFi Dream Machine aimed at consumers does via it's Threat Management but with 850Mbps throughput limit if using DPI, UniFi Dream Machine has better specs though. I don't own and have not used UniFi equipment though just been browsing there products of late out of interest. Not sure DPI would work on my RT-AC86U router even if there was a way as think it would grind my router to a halt lol.

Nuts!

So is there another app people can recommend better than Netnanny. It does show youtube videos and such but like doesn't show how long they have been on roblox for instance

Sounds like DNSFilter could help you. LAN - DNSFilter, specifically opendns family, you can configure all sort of blocking via their portal to. I've not that worry myself so can't remember the portal been a long time since i used it but sounds like it could be of use to you.

Also take a look at AiProtection - Parental Controls for time scheduling and web & app filters.

I can't give specific instructions as no use for it myself but shouldn't be to difficult as it's all in the router web gui.

Search these forums for Suricata.

That isn't quite the same thing, though, is it?
Suricata is more Intrusion Detection to prove the security of your system than tracking the kids online activities to make sure they're not up to no good...isn't it?

True. It will do DPI, but mostly for security purposes, not for traffic tracking.

DPI of encrypted packet is definitely not gonna happen on such a low-powered devices such as a home router.
