New Around Here
Hi folks, I'm new here.

I bought a Dell 3110cn a while back at a college surplus sale (along with a lifetime supply of toner) for a great deal, but have never been able to connect it to my network. Its only interface is a network port.

Admittedly I'm the go-to person at my school for technology needs, but I have little actual experience with network infrastructure, protocols, etc.

When I plug the printer into my router, I have no way of finding it or having it acknowledge its existence.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Alright, first thing first, you need to find out what subnet you're operating on.

Go to your Network and Sharing centre -> Local Area Network Connection -> Details.

Write down your IP address, Subnet Mask & Default Gateway.

This is usually:
IP address: 192.168.xx.yy
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.xx.zz

Now, key in the default gateway IP in your web browser. Look for DHCP server, this could be under the LAN tab.

Find the issued address range. e.g. 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200.

Now, choose an IP address for the printer, it has to be in the format 192.168.xx.yy that does not fall in the DHCP range.

Now, on to configuring the Printer.

1. Turn on the printer.
Wait for "Ready to Print" to appear on the LCD.
2. Press "Menu" Button.
3. Press "Down" until Admin Menu appears, and then press "Tick" button.
4. Press Down" until Wired Network appears, and then press "Tick" button.
5. Press Down" until TCP/IP appears, and then press "Tick" button.
6. Press Down" until IP Address appears, and then press "Tick" button.
7.The cursor is located at the first digit set of the IP address. Press "Up" or "Down" to enter the numbers for the IP address.
8. Press "Right".
The cursor moves to the next digit.
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 to enter all of the digits in the IP address, and then press "Tick".
10. Press "Left".
11. Press "Down" until Subnet Mask appears, and then press "Tick".
12. Repeat steps 7 to 8 to set Subnet Mask (this is the same as what you find above), and then press "Tick".
13. Press "Left".
14. Press until Gateway Address appears, and then press "Tick".
15. Repeat steps 7 to 8 to set Gateway Address, and then press "Tick".
16. Turn off the printer, and then turn it on again.

You can now access the printer at the set IP address and also install drivers pointing to the set IP address.

What O/S are you using?

Can you look in your router and see the printers IP address?

Can the printer be reset to defaults? Do so if you find the option available. It may be set to a static IP which is different than what you're using in your home network.

With the above done, go to Printers or Devices and Printers depending on the version of Windows you're using, and add a Network Printer.

Along with the post above, this should get you going in the right path.

Wow thank you both! I'm in the process of moving, and it's thinking about setting up the network in the new house that inspired the question. When the dust has settled a little bit I'll give it a go. I really appreciate the step-by-steps here. Thanks again!
