For now I have my eyes on ASUS RT-AC1200G or G+ which should soon get dd-wrt support. What do you think about those? Both are broadcom-based.

preferably CPU connected ethernet ports
Still a noob so gotta ask - thought all lan ports are controlled by the cpu, but from your words it appears not to be the case.

In most consumer routers and many non consumer the ports connect through a switch chip. Normally this isnt an issue if you plan to connect many devices by wire but if you are using only 1 port, CPU connected ports are better. If you look at mikrotik block diagrams and performance, CPU connected ports use less CPU.
