I've seen comments saying this has 128mb ram and others saying its 256mb - does anyone know the answer and will it matter if I am not using it for cloud/media storage?

You're right (I thought the spec's were 'actual').

I am leaning towards Tim's guesses though; even if it has 256MB on board doesn't mean it is all enabled.

If you weren't using the USB storage option then the RAM shouldn't matter - it may though if you were using VPN, QoS or other processor and memory intense uses.

I certainly would use QoS ... I am torn between this one, the R6250 and R6300v2. I can get the r6300v2 for 130 and the other two for 100....

If you're doing P2P the R6300 is out...

You'll have to choose which band is more important and if range will be an issue too.

Considering all the data above; I would be recommending to save for a better router than any of these choices above which will limit you one way or another.

You're fine... if this meets your needs, it's a pretty decent performer - not my first choice, but I'm waiting for the next wave of 802.11ac routers.

Personally i would stay away from Dlink. Their firmware development is a disaster at best, unless they stopped screwing around and got their act together over the years.

I was encouraged that Dlink had a few 2014 beta firmware builds available... of the r6250 or refurbished ea6500, what would you recommend?

D-Link's firmware is highly restrictive. Go for DD-WRT instead.

If you're going that route, choose Kong's instead of Brainslayer's for better 802.11ac performance.

I honestly dont know. You might have to hit up the manufacturer forums and see what the common issues are at the moment for each router.

If you must have AC router, then i can only suggest AC56U, as it seems to have best and stable factory firmware at this time. Other wise, chose the router based on hardware specs, price and install DD-WRT firmware or TomatoeRaf firmware.
